A 76-year-old woman died last night, four hours after being struck by a car at the intersection of Kuakini and 'Alaneo streets in Liliha.

The woman died at The Queen's Medical Center at 9:51 p.m. She suffered head and multiple body injuries in the 5:46 p.m. accident, said John Agno, police vehicular homicide investigator.

Agno said the woman was in a marked crosswalk walking from east to west when she was struck by a 2001 Honda Accord turning left onto 'Alaneo from Kuakini on a green light.

The pedestrian was crossing on the same green light and investigators are trying to determine whether she was walking with or against the pedestrian crossing signal, said Agno.

The 77-year-old driver, a woman, was not injured.

It was O'ahu's 11th pedestrian fatality of the year but the first since Honolulu police launched a pedestrian safety enforcement campaign on March 6.

The 11 pedestrians killed were at least 59 years old and four of them were older than 80. Seven were women ages 66 to 81.

Four of the pedestrians killed this year were struck in marked crosswalks while two others were on sidewalks, including one waiting at a bus stop. The remaining five were not in marked crosswalks.

The death is O'ahu's 28th traffic fatality in 2007, compared with 29 on the same date last year.

By comparison, pedestrians have accounted for only one of 12 Big Island fatalities in 2007. Maui has one pedestrian death among its three fatalities while Kaua'i has none.

From 2003 through 2006, 85 pedestrians were killed on O'ahu's roadways, with a high of 28 in 2005.
