Harada tops field at state gymnastics event

Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics Club's Megan Harada earned the highest all-around score at the Junior Olympic Optional-Level Hawai'i State Championships on April 1 at Kamehameha Schools' O'ahu campus.
Harada, a 15-year-old Punahou student, scored 38.35 to win the level 10, age 12-15 division. The competition featured 90 gymnasts from eight clubs on O'ahu, Maui and Big Island.
Other all-around state champions: Rebecca Cardenas (level 10, senior A), Kara Mun (level 10, senior B), Tiara Rapp (level 9, 11-12), Andrea Prohaska (level 9, 13), Carson Tabiolo (level 9, 14), Dayle Akamine (level 9, 15+), Kiana Palin (level 8, 9-10), Brittany Chen (level 8, 11), Kate Miller (level 8, 12-13), Valerie Murphy (level 8, 14+), Shea Helfer (level 7, 7-9), Jonalei Aguirre (level 7, 10), Amber Kozaki (level 7, 11), Keaolani Cenido-Niheu (level 7, 12-13), Savannah Close (level 7, 14+).
A total of 49 Hawai'i gymnasts qualified for the USA Junior Olympic Region 2 Championships, April 21 to 23, at Yakima, Wash.
Meanwhile, eight level 8 gymnasts earned a spot on the Hawai'i State Team for the Yakima event.
Hawai'i State Team: Island Tumblers Gymnastics' Taryn Chun, and Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics' Valerie Murphy, Brittany Chen, Kiana Palin, Makeala Cachola-Waialae, Kate Miller, Meghan Reed and Nicole Aviles.

POWELL-ROOS SETS U.S. WOMEN'S MARK AT MAUI
Two-time Olympian Suzy Powell-Roos broke the U.S. women's record with her throw of 222 feet at the Maui "Big-Wind" Discus Challenge on April 14 at War Memorial Stadium Complex in Wailuku, Maui.
Powell-Roos, a 1996 and 2000 Olympian, surpassed Carol Cady's throw of 216 feet, 10 inches set in 1986.
In the men's events, 2004 Olympian Ian Waltz registered the best mark in the world this year with his throw of 220 feet, 9 inches.

MASAKI WINS OVERALL TITLE AT REGIONALS
Ed Masaki won eight of 15 categories and captured the overall gold medal at the Hawai'i Regional Championships, Saturday and Sunday, at the Kokohead Shooting Complex.
Masaki scored 2,561 points with 73 center hits. Mike Mallon placed second, scoring 2,544 with 91 center hits, and Stephen Hirasuna took third, scoring 2,489 with 62 center hits.
Henry Balmores won the Distinguished Award.
