Steel guitar fans to unite

The steel guitar will be king when the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association presents its 2007 biennial convention, Tuesday through April 27 at the Queen Kapi'olani hotel.

Amateur and professional Hawaiian steel guitar musicians will perform from 8:35 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the 'Akala Ballroom of the hotel, intended for participating performers.

Admission is $10 per day, $26 for a luncheon buffet from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Following the convention, three free public concerts are scheduled:

  • " 'Ahamele Kiki Kila," from 1 to 3 p.m. April 28, at Waikiki-Kapahulu Library. Local and visiting Hawaiian steel guitar musicians will perform.

  • "2007 Jerry Byrd Ho'olaule'a Concert," from 1 to 5 p.m., April 29, at the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse's second-floor ballroom. The tribute to the late Jerry "Manu" Byrd, noted steel guitarist, will feature Duke Kaleolani Ching, Kiyoshi "Lion" Kobayashi, Tom Tohma and Alan Akaka.

  • "Ho'okani Kika Kila," from noon to 4 p.m. May 1, at Kapi'olani Park. A concert that's part of the city's Lei Day contest celebration, with association musicians performing steel favorites.
