'AIEA A classic pitchers' duel yesterday ended with 'Aiea's first hit as the game-winner with no outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, resulting in a 1-0 victory for Na Ali'i over O'ahu Interscholastic Association rival Mililani at 'Aiea Recreation Center Field.
Na Ali'i improved to 6-1 in the OIA's Western Division, while the Trojans fell to 7-1.
Mililani's Dustin Antolin and Joey Aquino had combined on a no-hitter through nine innings, but Ryan Murakami walked to lead off the bottom of the 10th. He stole second, then dashed home on Keenan Naeole's high-bouncing single to left field.
'Aiea starter Randy Castillo, who pitched all 10 innings and struck out 12 with two walks, received the hard-earned victory.
"My arm felt good, but my legs were cramping up," said Castillo, a 6-foot-2 hard-throwing junior right-hander who finished with 130 pitches. "I never wanted to come out; I was willing to do whatever it took to win. But I'm glad it's over."
The game did seem like it might never end.
Mililani had only three hits and five base runners through the regulation seven innings, and the only Na Ali'i batter to reach base was Jared Iwane, who got aboard on an infield error in the third.
'Aiea had a runner on second with two outs in the eighth, but Antolin induced a foul pop-up in short left field to end the inning.
"He was lights-out," Na Ali'i coach Ryan Kato said of Antolin, a 6-foot-1 flame-throwing junior right-hander who struck out seven and walked one in 8 1/3 innings. "Our game plan went out the window after the second inning. I was amazed at how well he threw, and it wasn't just his fastball. Our kids said his slider was knee-buckling. But one thing I had confidence in was our pitching and defense, and I told our guys hopefully something will happen eventually."
'Aiea had an even better opportunity in the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But reliever Aquino got a ground ball to short for a force play at home and then a strikeout to escape the jam.
The Trojans had their chance to take the lead after loading the bases with two outs in the 10th. But Castillo got an inning-ending strikeout with a 2-2 split-fingered fastball.
"Hat's off to him, he's the best pitcher we've faced all year," Mililani coach Dean Sato said. "That was a gutty performance. He kept us off-balanced and was still blowing the fastball by us in the late innings, even after he got into trouble."
Na Ali'i finally broke through in the bottom of the 10th, after Murakami walked on a 3-1 pitch and stole second without a throw. Naeole then fouled off an 0-2 pitch before hitting the sharp grounder that took a high bounce over the third baseman's head, allowing Murakami to slide home well ahead of the one-hop line throw from left field.
"I told our kids that this is baseball, and things like this happen," Sato said of losing on a one-hitter. "I can live with it, because at least it wasn't an error. 'Aiea is a tough, scrappy team."
