Roosevelt runs past Farrington, 43-29

Roosevelt's Tiana Sugui needed one half to make a difference against the Farrington girls basketball team last night.
Sugui overcame early foul trouble and scored 10 of her 12 points in the third quarter, and Dianna Zane and Iwalani Rodrigues each added 11 points as the visiting Rough Riders defeated the Governors, 43-29, in a Red Conference Eastern Division game.
"I wanted to contribute a lot," said Sugui, who played sparingly in the first half after she was whistled for her second foul with 5:13 to play in the first quarter. "I missed a lot of my minutes."
Farrington's deliberate half-court offense worked early, and the Governors (5-4) managed to stay close to Roosevelt (8-0), which held a 9-6 lead after the first quarter.
Farrington rallied to tie the score three times in the second quarter, the last at 15-all on Macilee Moi's short jumper in the lane.
But Farrington couldn't sustain the momentum after losing starting point guard C'ani Kealoha early in the second quarter when she collided with a Roosevelt player and sat out the rest of the half with a gash above her right eye.
Kealoha returned in the second half with a bandage over the injury.
"I think Farrington's a real good team," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said. "If they get healthy, and they stay healthy, they're a team I don't want to run into again."
Roosevelt — the defending OIA Division I champions — broke the 15-all deadlock with an 11-0 run spanning the third quarter to take a 26-15 lead.
Shandree Armstead's short jumper in the lane broke the tie, and Sugui capped the surge by scoring five consecutive points in the third quarter. Sugui hit two 3-pointers in the quarter, and Zane added one.
"We look at (Sugui) as our runner," Keanini said. "She makes the game uptempo. And having Dianna Zane with the ball, she's going to find whoever is running the court."
Farrington went nearly seven minutes without scoring before Elaine Leaupepe hit a spinning layup to cut the deficit to 26-17 with 3:47 left in the third quarter.
"We played really well defensively," Rodrigues said. "And Dianna handled the ball really well. She found the open man, and she got open shots."
Roosevelt stretched its lead to as many as 21 points late in the fourth quarter when Rodrigues stole the ball, passed to Zane and got the ball back for one of her four layups in the game.
"Iwalani got some fastbreaks and some transition layups that really got them started," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "Give them credit. They came out prepared, but we'll be back."
