Once 'Iolani got the first half out of the way last night against Punahou, it was relatively smooth sailing.
'Iolani, which was plagued by missed shots and turnovers in the first half, outscored host Punahou 40-18 in the second and cruised to a 49-34 Interscholastic League of Honolulu victory.
'Iolani improved to 6-1; Punahou dropped to 3-3. Kamehameha is in second at 4-1.
The numbers in the first half for 'Iolani last night weren't good: 1 for 15 from the field, 7 of 15 from the free-throw line, 14 turnovers.
"It was a big game for us," 'Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "We got excited. Credit Punahou. They came out hard."
Despite its troubles, 'Iolani only trailed 16-9 at halftime.
The Raiders hit 7 of 13 shots in the third quarter, and 16 of 20 free-throw attempts in the fourth to pull away. They also committed only six turnovers after halftime.
"In the first half, our shots just weren't falling," said 'Iolani's Jamie Smith, who had nine points, 13 rebounds and three steals despite early foul trouble. "We just kept on shooting and then our shots started falling. That motivated us more and once we got motivated, there was no stopping us."
The Buffanblu took their largest lead at 18-9 on a layup by Janelle Nomura on the first possession of the second half.
'Iolani responded with a 20-5 run to take a 29-23 lead with 20 seconds left in the third. Sarah Turgeon's 3-pointer from the top of the key put the Raiders ahead 23-21 with 2:42 left, and Chanel Hirata's 3-pointer from the right wing capped the rally.
"We pulled together as a team, and fought through everything," said Dayna Jandoc, who scored 12 points.
Punahou was within 38-34 with 3:16 remaining, but the Raiders scored the final 11 points from the line.
Punahou was 4 of 27 from the field after halftime and committed 13 turnovers.
The key for 'Iolani was being able to break the Buffanblu's full-court press in the second half.
"In the first half, we were successful because we were coming hard at people, going at the right time," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said. "In the third quarter and fourth quarter, we just ran all over the place without any organization."
