The Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball race is back to dead-heat status, after Kamehameha stunned visiting 'Iolani, 55-42, last night at Kekuhaupi'o Gym.
The teams are now tied atop the ILH standings at 4-1; four-time defending league champ Punahou is a step back at 2-2.
"It's up for grabs now," said Kamehameha junior Rhani Kaneaiakala, who scored 10 points, grabbed four rebounds and had two assists last night. "It's going to come down to who wants it the most."
The Warriors showed last night they want their shot at the title.
Kamehameha jumped to a 14-5 lead in the first period and never trailed after the opening minutes. The Raiders cut it to 16-13 on Chanel Hirata's layup two minutes into the second quarter, but the Warriors answered with a 6-0 run to make it 22-13 with 2:56 remaining.
'Iolani's Dayna Jandoc drained a 3-pointer at the 2:40 mark to make it 22-16, but Kamehameha again responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead to 28-16.
The Raiders cut it to 28-19 on another 3 by Jandoc five seconds before halftime.
"Effort-wise, (the Warriors) came out strong and took it to us in the beginning," 'Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "From that point on, they had us on our heels."
Kamehameha did a particularly good job defensively on forward Jamie Smith and wing Alana Matayoshi, two of the Raiders' top scoring threats. Smith had just four points at halftime and Matayoshi had zero.
"We wanted Ana (Viena-Lota) to pick up Jamie at full court and then have Alex (Akana) guard her in the halfcourt (set)," Warriors coach Clay Cockett said. "There was a lot of team help on both of them (Smith and Matayoshi)."
'Iolani got as close as 39-34 after Smith's short bank shot with 4:33 remaining in the game, but Lindsey Wong got a steal and layup and later sank a free throw to push the lead to 42-34.
Smith cut it to 42-36 on a layup with 2:01 left, but fouled out moments later while trying to make a steal near halfcourt. She finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Tami Konishi's 3-pointer cut it to 45-39 with 1:03 remaining, but Kamehameha sank eight free throws down the stretch.
The Warriors finished the game with 19 free throws on 30 attempts, while the Raiders were just 3 of 9 from the line.
Wong led all scorers with 16 points, and Viena-Lota added 11. Konishi led 'Iolani with 11 points.
