At 6 feet tall and weighing 250 pounds, Kaimuki High School senior Keone Reyes may not fit the physical profile of a typical standout basketball forward.

With his relentless power underneath the basket, you wouldn't expect to see him launching (and making) 3-point shots.

And as a sophomore on the Bulldogs' JV team two years ago, Reyes probably would not have been anyone's predicted choice for State Player of the Year some 26 months later.

But Reyes, a gifted athlete full of surprises, proved to be a unanimous selection among voters for the 2007 Advertiser All-State Team and was the overwhelming choice for Player of the Year.

Reyes is joined on the All-State first team by four other seniors: Punahou guard Miah Ostrowski, Kaimuki forward Beau Albrechtson, Saint Louis forward Scott Smith and Punahou center Spencer McLachlin.

Reyes, the first Kaimuki player to win The Advertiser's top honors since Shannon Lee in 1993, finished a storybook career by helping the Bulldogs win their first state championship in 14 years.

He averaged 16.8 points per game during the regular and post-season in almost every way possible — on clever inside moves or putbacks after strong rebounds, draining medium-range jump shots around the key, swishing 3-pointers from the wing.

"Keone was hard to stop," Kamehameha-Hawai'i coach Nelson Wong said, after watching Reyes score a season-high 27 points and dish out four assists against his Warriors in the state semifinals. "We tried playing straight man, we tried playing support defense ... but that spin move is something we don't see a lot of on the Big Island. He's their main guy down low, and he showed why."

After Kaimuki's up-and-down 7-5 regular season, Reyes led the Bulldogs' playoff charge with unshakable confidence and clutch play in the biggest games. He had a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds in a 59-52 victory at No. 1 West seed Mililani in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals, a game that sealed their state tournament berth.

"Keone was a man in there," Mililani coach Hiram Akina said after the game. "He took care of all the defensive rebounds, and we couldn't get any second shots."

In Kaimuki's 56-45 win over Kalaheo for its second straight OIA title, Reyes scored 16 points — including three 3-point baskets — despite early foul trouble.

And in a 54-44 state championship game victory over Punahou, Reyes finished with 21 points and seven rebounds, including eight points and two rebounds down the stretch to help the Bulldogs hold off a late comeback attempt by the Buffanblu.

Reyes garnered 80 percent of the votes from coaches and media for State Player of the Year, with the only other top votes going to Ostrowski.

A 5-9 point guard, Ostrowski joins former 'Iolani standout Derrick Low as the only players to be selected to The Advertiser's All-State first team four times. He averaged 19.3 points per game, mostly through a dazzling array of drives to the basket or mid- to long-range jumpers.

In perhaps his finest performance, Ostrowski scored 26 points, dished out seven assists, made four steals and grabbed two rebounds in a 60-46 victory at 'Iolani that snapped the Raiders' six-year stranglehold on the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title and gave Punahou its first ILH crown since 1999.

"Miah stepped up and really did not want to be denied," Buffanblu coach Dan Hale said after the game. "He was unbelievable."

Reyes and Ostrowski were the only unanimous All-State first-team selections and repeat choices.

McLachlin, a 6-7 center, was a near-unanimous choice, falling just one vote short. He averaged 12.9 points per game and was a versatile post player who could rebound, block shots and step out and hit the 3.

McLachlin scored a season-high 23 points in a crucial victory over Saint Louis, just four days after Punahou suffered its only ILH loss (to 'Iolani). In the league finale against the Raiders, McLachlin scored 11 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked four shots and made two steals.

He shared ILH Co-Player of the Year honors with Smith.

Albrechtson, a 6-4 forward, was a similarly versatile post player for Kaimuki.

He averaged 16.6 points per game and was the perfect complement to Reyes — especially during games when Reyes was saddled with foul trouble.

In an OIA semifinal victory over Radford, Albrechtson scored a game-high 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, had two steals and a key block to lead the Bulldogs to a 68-59 victory. That included nine points, five rebounds, both steals and the crucial block in the decisive fourth period.

Against Saint Louis in the state quarterfinals, Albrechtson scored a game-high 22 points on 11 for 11 shooting and gave Kaimuki a 53-49 lead on a layup with 51 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs ended up winning, 53-51.

Smith, a 6-7 forward, was an immovable force for the Crusaders in the post. He averaged 14.4 points per game, but also showed athleticism in grabbing rebounds, blocking shots or making steals.

In one crucial weekend, Smith had 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals in a 49-39 victory over Kamehameha, then scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, made five steals and blocked a shot in a 51-48 win over 'Iolani — Saint Louis' first over the Raiders since 2001.

He also scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, made four steals and blocked a shot in a 49-31 victory over Kamehameha that clinched third place in the ILH and put the Crusaders in position to win a state tournament berth at Konawaena, which they did. Smith had 11 points and five rebounds, two blocks and two steals, all in the first half as Saint Louis won, 63-42.

Moanalua junior Stevie Austin leads an all-guard Advertiser All-State second team. The others are seniors: 'Iolani's Ryan Dung, Kamehameha's Rykin Enos, Kamehameha-Hawai'i's Mea Wong and Radford's Gary Satterwhite.

Kaimuki's Kelly Grant repeated as Coach of the Year.

The Bulldogs (14-5) lost twice each to Kalaheo and Moanalua and also fell to 3-9 Roosevelt in the regular season, but regrouped to finish the year with seven straight victories. Grant, in his third year at the Kaimuki helm, played on Maryknoll's 1984 state championship team.
