Advertiser Staff

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui — April 15 is the deadline to apply for six openings with the Youth Conservation Corps on Maui.

The program runs from June 11 through July 20, and is open to teenagers who are 15 to 18. They will be paid to work on park trails and conduct maintenance at the summit and Kipahulu districts of Haleakala National Park.

Applications are available on Maui at the MEO Youth Bank, schools and the Haleakala Visitors Center.

Also at Haleakala, the Student Conservation Association has three positions offering stipends to those willing to assist visitors or help reduce threats to endangered birds. The positions are being offered in three-month terms through September.

Apply online at www.theSCA.org.

The national park has year-round volunteer opportunities, including monthly service trips in the crater organized by the Friends of Haleakala. Participants stay in backcountry cabins while weeding invasive plants, repairing cabins and protecting native ecosystems. The schedule of trips is posted online at www.fhnp.org/service.html.

Help also is needed for nearly two dozen unpaid positions including trail maintenance, visitor assistance, weed control, cultural demonstrations, and library and clerical help. The time commitment ranges from two to 40 hours per week. Transportation from Makawao is available.

Apply online at www.nps.gov/hale/supportyourpark/volunteer-opportunities.htm. For additional information, call (808) 572-4487.
