Fred Badua, senior financial analyst for Servco Pacific Inc., has been elected chairman of the executive board of the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU OF HAWAII. Other officers include, first vice chair, Harry Byerly, associate vice president, Hawaii Pacific University, Center for Graduate Studies; second vice chair, Wayne Kirihara, senior vice president - marketing, Central Pacific Bank; secretary, Philip Sammer, general manager, 'Ilima Hotel; treasurer, Allen Cottral, president, Waikiki Trader Corp., immediate past chair, Mark Murakami, of Carlsmith Ball LLP.
The entire board of directors consists of 28 members. Bonnie Horibata continues as the organization's interim chief executive officer while a permanent appointment is sought. There are about 3,000 BBB Hawaii business members.
NICHOLAS ABRUSCATO, a more than 20-year veteran of national and international hotel, restaurant and food and beverage management with Hyatt Corp., has joined Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa as senior director of food and beverage. He will oversee food and beverage operations of the 806-room, 40-acre, $36 million resort, including six restaurants, four lounges, banquet service, 150,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and event functions, food service, and a food and beverage team of 375 employees. Since 1995 he has worked at Hyatt properties in Virginia, Los Angeles, and, most recently, Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. He has been at various Hyatt hotels in Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, Miami, New Orleans, Chicago and Grand Cayman Island.
PHILIP RICKARD has been elected president of the 250 member (including associate members) Hawaii Jewelers Association, the local jewelry trade advocacy affiliate of Jewelers of America. Rickard's Hawaiian jewelry manufacturer, Philip Rickard Honolulu, has two retail locations in Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.
Honolulu attorney Marvin Dang has been appointed by the president of the 400,000-member American Bar Association to its 13-member "Coalition for Justice." The group works to restore public confidence in the justice system by fostering justice system improvement advocacy at the state and local level. Dang, a 28-year Hawai'i attorney, is managing member of the five-member Law Offices of Marvin S.C. Dang LLLC.
Catherine Awakuni has been named executive director of the state Division of Consumer Advocacy. As head of DCA, she will oversee the division's representation of consumer interests before the state Public Utilities Commission and other local and federal agencies. Awakuni has been serving as PUC counsel since 2002, and before that, was an associate at Bodden & Muraoka law corporation, and Ashford & Wriston LLP, specializing in real property transactions, estate planning and entity formation. She replaces John Cole, who joined the PUC.
STEPHEN BOYER, former facilities manager of East-West Center for nine years, has been named director of plant facilities for Shriners Hospitals for Children Honolulu, overseeing the orthopedic care center's building maintenance, groundskeeping and security. A former Shriners Hospital maintenance worker, Boyer has more than 15 years of facilities experience and more than 12 years in management.
NICOLE HILLYARD has joined Peter Vincent & Associates as an architectural designer and model maker. She has more than three years of accredited design experience, and will be responsible for developing —and heading — the new model shop.
CINDY MORALES, former assistant manager of Dixie Grill's 'Aiea outlet, has been named general manager of Dixie Grill Bar-b-que & Crab Shack on Ward Avenue. The four-year company veteran worked her way up from food server.
