'Mayhem' will defend Icon title here Dec. 1

Frank Trigg of New York will challenge Jason "Mayhem" Miller for the Icon Sport middleweight championship on Dec. 1 at the Blaisdell Arena.
The match was announced yesterday by the Icon Sport organization.
Trigg is 13-5 and was once ranked among the top 10 in the world in his weight class. After losing a bout in April, Trigg said he was going to retire from competition. However, he has continued to train in California.
Miller is 17-4 and won the Icon Sport championship by defeating Robbie Lawler on Sept. 2. The Dec. 1 bout will be his first title defense.
Lawler is also expected to fight on the card, although his opponent has yet to be determined.
Tickets will be available starting Sept. 30 at the Blaisdell box office and Ticketmaster outlets.
BASKETBALL
DAMIEN HIRES COITO
Mike Coito, who led Mililani High to two state semifinals, has been named head varsity basketball coach at Damien Memorial School, according to athletic director Pohai Lee.
He succeeds Abe Kamana'o, who resigned after three seasons.
Coito, 51, is a former Honolulu policeman and fireman, and a 1972 Damien graduate.
He coached Mililani from 2000 to 2005, taking the Trojans to the state tournament in 2001-04. Coito's teams lost to Iolani in the 2002 and 2004 state semifinals.
Coito coached Damien's intermediate basketball team last season.
Coito has also been head coach for the Mililani boys' (1998-2000) and girls' junior varsity (2000) teams, and assistant coach to the Mililani girls' varsity team (1989-1992).
SOCCER
UH'S CHANG HONORED
Hawai'i midfielder Kelli-Anne Chang was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Chang, a sophomore from 'Aiea, scored two goals as the Rainbow Wahine went 2-0-1 on the week.
She helped UH win a share of the Outrigger Hotels Soccer Shootout championship and was named to the all-tournament team. She scored the game-winning goal with two seconds left in the first overtime period over Cornell and led UH with seven shots in a 0-0 tie against San Francisco.
She also scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute in UH's come-from-behind, 2-1, double-overtime win at Northern Arizona.
Fresno State goalkeeper Angie Larsen was the WAC Defensive Player of the Week. Hawai'i goalkeeper Lori Lu was nominated.
CROSS COUNTRY
UH'S LAAN HONORED
Hawai'i junior Chantelle Laan is the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week. She captured her second individual title of the season over the weekend.
Laan, from London, Ontario, completed the 4K Big Wave Invitational course in 15:05 Saturday. Earlier this season, she won the Chaminade Invitational. She now has three career individual titles.
The Rainbow Wahine won the Big Wave team title, with three runners in the top four. UH also won the Chaminade Invitational three weeks ago.
Laan and UH will be seeking their third victories at the Brigham Young-Hawai'i Invitational on Saturday.
PADDLING
WAIMANALO WON
The Waimanalo Canoe Club won the masters 55-and-older division and placed 12th overall in the Henry Ayau Memorial Race on Sunday.
Waimanalo completed the 33-mile course from Maunalua Bay to Nanakuli Beach in 4 hours, 10 minutes, 4 seconds. New Hope placed second in the masters 55-and-older division with a time of 4:47:17.
Paddlers in the winning crew were Harold Akeo, Fred Berengue, Charlie Kalama, Nolan Kim, Miner Lii, Mel Mau, Jeff Metzger, Billy Mowat, Bernie Paloma, Dennis Sallas, Butch Ukishima and Carl Woehrle.

VOLLEYBALL
HPU SWEPT AWAY
Tonya Rooth and Dana Edington each had nine kills, and Grand Canyon had a .312 hitting percentage in sweeping Hawai'i Pacific, 30-22, 30-21, 30-25, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at St. Andrew's Priory gym.
Emily Thomson and Ashley Handley each added nine digs for Grand Canyon (6-5 overall, 3-0 PacWest).
Barbara Martin had 11 kills and Chelsea Taylor nine for HPU (2-10, 0-4).
SAVAGE SPURS HILO RALLY
Taina Savage amassed 29 kills and 21 digs as Hawai'i-Hilo rallied past Notre Dame de Namur, 26-30, 30-27, 30-27, 30-22, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at Hilo civic.
Desarri Olevao added 11 kills and 13 digs, Kaniu Hernandez had 10 kills and nine digs, and setter Kahealani Silva contributed 42 assists and 19 digs for the Vulcans (4-9).
Marissa Miller led Notre Dame de Namur (7-8) with 16 kills and 15 digs. Emily Evans added 15 kills, and Shauna Folan 17 digs.
BYUH RISES TO NO. 9
The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's team moved up one spot to No. 9 in the NCAA II rankings released yesterday.
The Seasiders (7-0) received one first-place vote and 607 points — up from 556 last week.
BYUH, one of five undefeated NCAA II teams, will host Grand Canyon tonight at 7:30.
