The Farrington Governors didn't have starting quarterback Elijah Filifili last night against Kailua.

They also didn't have any trouble dominating the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East game at Roosevelt.

Maeli Siliga was solid running Farrington's offense and the Governors dominated the line of scrimmage in a 35-0 victory.

Farrington (3-1 overall, 3-0 OIA Red East) rushed for 298 yards, averaging 8.3 yards per carry.

"We always felt we could run the ball," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "We have four returning linemen."

On their first possession, the Governors marched 65 yards on 10 running plays, capped by Joshua Fernandez's 1-yard run with 5:42 left in the quarter.

Farrington scored again 54 seconds later when defensive back Mark Stowers intercepted a pass by Zachary Akamine and returned it 41 yards.

"We weren't sharp at all," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "Farrington is a good team and if you're not ready, you'll have trouble."

Farrington's Siliga completed 6 of 12 passes for 72 yards, and rushed eight times for 54 yards.

"Maeli Siliga, No. 8, was a backup last season and started a few games last season," Okimoto said. "He has the experience and we have full faith in him."

Okimoto added the offense was "scaled back" with Siliga at the controls.

Filifili said he broke his right index finger during Thursday's practice when he hit a defender's helmet on his follow through. He said he hopes to play in two weeks.

"He did a good job," Filifili said of Siliga. "I liked the way he carried the team."

The Governors' Fernandez finished with 118 yards on eight carries, including a spectacular 68-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter.

On the play, Fernandez broke through the line of scrimmage, sprinted down the left sideline, broke through a number of defenders near the 20, cut back and dived into the end zone.

The Farrington defense intercepted two passes, forced five punts and held Kailua (2-3, 1-2) on downs three times.

"The defense has been playing well all season," Okimoto said. "Our front four on defense are the leaders."

The front four are Sam Fehoko, Taua Olomua, Laoleamiotonu Tuimalealiifano and Andrew Noga.

The deepest penetration for the Surfriders was to the Farrington 18 on the first possession of the second half, but Fehoko tackled Akamine for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-2.

Kailua, which committed three penalties in the first half, had nine infractions for 90 yards in the second.

Farrington's 90-yard scoring drive in the third quarter was aided by defensive pass interference, unsportsmanlike conduct and personal foul penalties.

The Governors scored on a 10-yard pass from Siliga to Elijah Lesu with 7 seconds left in the quarter, which made it 21-0.

"Those are the things we talk about constantly, and the kids made poor decisions," Rosolowich said of the penalties. "They will suffer the consequences for their actions."

Farrington scored on its two fourth-quarter possessions — Fernandez's long run and a 5-yard run by Kelemete Talia — to start the 35-point differential rule (running clock) with 4:52 left.
