A 29-year-old man was sentenced yesterday to a maximum 20-year prison term for robbery and driving off with a car with a naked woman clinging to the hood last year.

Adric Lanaki was sentenced by Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario for the robbery and stealing the rental car Aug. 22, 2005 from a 21-year-old woman and her boyfriend who were camping at Mokule'ia Beach.

The woman, a visitor from Bulgaria, had been sunbathing in the nude before she tried to stop the car to prevent the theft of her belongings, including her passport, but Lanaki drove off with her clinging to the hood, according to prosecutors.

He drove to Hale'iwa, trying to shake her off the car, then turned around, stopped near Camp Erdman and threw the woman off the hood, according to Deputy Prosecutor Franklin Pacarro Jr.

Del Rosario also ordered Lanaki to serve other five-year prison terms for stolen car and drug offenses that will run at the same time as the robbery sentence.

SEAGULL SCHOOLS SETS FUNDRAISER

Seagull Schools will hold "Pirates for Peace," a fundraiser at Cha Cha Cha Salsaria on Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. at the Hawai'i Kai Shopping Center.

Seagull Schools is a nonprofit educational group serving Hawai'i since 1971 and is the state's largest childcare provider. About 600 children from around the state attend the schools in Kailua, Kapolei, Honolulu and at the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island.

The school also has an adult daycare service at its Kapolei site for 50 disabled seniors.

Proceeds from the sale of food and beverages will benefit the school.

MAN ARRESTED IN GIRLFRIEND ASSAULT

A 55-year-old Kapahulu man was arrested Tuesday after his 56-year-old girlfriend told police he robbed and assaulted her Monday night.

The woman told police she got into a heated argument with her boyfriend about 11 p.m. that continued until early the following morning during which he slapped her around and threatened to kill her. At one point, the boyfriend reached into her purse without permission and took $100, the woman told police.

Police were sent to an apartment in the 1000 block of Kapahulu Avenue and arrested the boyfriend on suspicion of second-degree robbery, first-degree terroristic threatening, three counts of abuse of a family or household member and three contempt-of-court warrants stemming from an unrelated case or cases.

BODY RECOVERED OFF SOUTH KOHALA

Witnesses in the South Kohala district of the Big Island recovered the body of a man who had been floating offshore in about 4 feet of water Tuesday afternoon.

The body was discovered around 4 p.m. in a bay between the Puako Boat Ramp and Wailea Bay, Big Island police said.

Police determined that the victim had launched his kayak from the Puako Boat Ramp and was last seen paddling south. An orange kayak was found washed ashore.

The victim has been identified but police are withholding his name pending notification of his next of kin. Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Chad Taniyama from the South Kohala police station at 887-3080.

CRASH VICTIM HAD HEART ATTACK

An autopsy performed on a 68-year-old Hawaiian Ocean View Estates man who died Sunday after being involved in a one-vehicle crash on Saturday determined that he died of a heart attack and not from injuries sustained in the crash.

Martin Knowlton was a passenger in a 1979 Chevrolet pickup truck that was traveling south on Route 11 when it ran off the right side of the road, struck a culvert and overturned.

Knowlton was partially ejected from the truck, which apparently had no seat belts.

Fire rescue workers took both the driver and Knowlton to Ka'u Hospital. The driver was treated and released.

Knowlton was later transferred to Kona Community Hospital.

He died at the hospital at 3:46 a.m. Sunday.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have reclassified the case from a negligent homicide to a coroner's inquest.
