No. 14 BYU-Hawai'i sweeps Chaminade

Michelle "Tuli" Peters hammered 24 kills as 14th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Chaminade, 30-22, 30-22, 30-22, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

Faylynn Merrick added 10 kills and six blocks, Lesina Funaki contributed 15 digs and setter LeeAnn Mapu had 45 assists and four kills with no errors as the Seasiders improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest.

Trina Kauliakamoa had 15 kills for the Silverswords (6-3 overall, 1-1 PacWest).

HILO HOLDS OFF HPU

Hawai'i-Hilo held off a big Hawai'i Pacific rally in the fifth game to win a Pacific West Conference volleyball match last night at Blaisdell Center Arena.

The Vulcans won 30-22, 23-30, 30-26, 25-30, 15-12.

In the fifth game, Hilo surged to a 10-4 lead, but the Sea Warriors tied it at 12 before the Vulcans won the final three points.

HPU CAPTURES CUP

Akihide Adachi and Gave Sugar scored one goal each as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 2-0, to win the men's Hawai'i College Challenge Cup last night at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

Adachi scored for the Sea Warriors (2-1) in the 43rd minute on an assist by Viktor Rafstedt. Sugar added an insurance goal against the Seasiders (1-2) in the 75th minute off an assist by Adachi.

In the third place game, Gene Okamura and Drew Geia scored one goal apiece to lift Hawai'i-Hilo past Chaminade, 2-0.

Okamura gave the Vulcans (1-1) a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, and Geia added his goal in the 76th minute against the Silverswords (0-3).

BYUH ROUTS HILO

Freshman Mesia Jones scored two goals as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 6-1, yesterday in a women's soccer match in La'ie.

Jill Haar, Emily Mearns, Kahanu Ah Puck and Anniken Carter also scored for the Seasiders (1-1), who outshot Hilo 21-7.

Karen Weatherby scored for the Vulcans (0-2).

Jones' first goal, 25 seconds before intermission, gave BYUH a 3-0 lead.

Freshman Ah Puck scored three minutes into the second half to make it 4-0, which remained the score until Weatherby scored in the 82nd minute.


GOLF

BOTELHO, WILLIAMS LEAD

K.C. Botelho shot a 5-under-par 66 yesterday to grab a share of the lead in the Hickam Invitational at the Mamala Bay Golf Course.

Botelho and Doug Williams (69) are at 4-under 138 entering today's final round. Craig Uyehara (70) is alone in third at 140.

Mohammad Ali (73—147) leads A Flight; Kenneth Creamer (78—158) leads B Flight; Phillip Anamizu (78) and Peter Olson (73) share the Senior Flight lead at 147; and Gary Haynie (77) and Wendell Kop (74) share the Super Senior Flight lead at 152.

The final round will begin at 6:40 a.m., with golfers starting from the first and 10th tees.

KONG, KOP FAR BACK

Gary Kong and Brandan Kop, Hawai'i representatives at the 26th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, are well off the pace after yesterday's first round at the Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Kong shot 9-over 81 at the par-72 Meadow Course and Kop shot 11-over 83 at the par-71 Canyon Course. Kong is tied for 203rd; Kop is tied for 239th.

Eric Rustand, of Tucson, Ariz., shot a 5-under 67 to lead the tournament for amateurs 25 and older.

The top 64 after today's second round will advance to match play.

CROSS COUNTRY



HILO, HPU PREVAIL

Hawai'i-Hilo's women and Hawai'i Pacific's men captured team titles yesterday at the UH-Hilo Invitational at the UHH Athletic Complex.

Led by Ashley Benson's third-place finish, the Hilo women scored a low-best 39 points to edge Brigham Young-Hawai'i by two points. BYUH's Amanda Whitford won the 6-kilometer race in 24 minutes, 55 seconds. HPU (61) placed third and Chaminade (80) fourth.

Todd Iacovelli won the 6k men's race in 19:47 to lead HPU (40) to a close victory over Hilo (41) and BYUH (43). Chaminade placed fourth with 96 points.
