Hawai'i, Pacific tie 0-0 in soccer

Despite being outshot 14-6, the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team played undefeated Pacific to a scoreless tie after two overtimes yesterday in the Four Points Sheraton Cats Classic at Tucson, Ariz.
Kori Lu made four saves as the Rainbow Wahine (3-1-1) recorded their third consecutive shutout.
Jamie Souza had three saves as the Tigers (4-0-1) tied a school-record with their fifth straight shutout.
Each team had just one shot on goal in the first half and just five total at the end of regulation. Pacific stepped up the attack after intermission — generating nine corner kicks and numerous forays in the box — but the UH defense was up to the challenge.
Hawai'i had a couple scoring opportunities in the second half. Kelli-Anne Chang fired a shot from 10 yards out in the 67th minute, and Taryn Fukuroku had a similar opportunity five minutes into the first overtime, but Souza smothered both shots.
The Rainbow Wahine will play host Arizona tomorrow.

HPU, BYUH WIN
Hawai'i Pacific overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Hawai'i-Hilo, 3-1, last night in the Hawai'i College Challenge Cup at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.
Christian Clemente tied the score, then assisted on Akihide Adachi's goal in the 73rd minute to put the Sea Warriors (1-1) ahead to stay. Michael King added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute.
Robert Geis gave the Vulcans (0-1) a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
In the first game, Joshua Barney scored two goals as Brigham Young-Hawai'i blitzed Chaminade, 5-0.
Michael Akinaka, Andrew Brown and Stephen Blake also scored for the Seasiders (1-1).
It was the season opener for the Silverswords.
The tournament featured all four Division II men's teams.

CU SWEEPS UH-HILO
Trina Kauliakamoa had 15 kills and 11 digs as Chaminade swept Hawaii-Hilo, 30-25, 30-27, 30-25, last night in a Pacific West Conference opener for both teams at McCabe Gym.
Vanja Radanovic added 12 kills and Tamara Kauliakamoa 41 assists for the Silverswords (6-2).
Taina Savage led the Vulcans (2-8) with 26 kills and 11 digs. Kaniu Hernandez added 11 kills and seven digs.
GOLF
WILLIAMS LEADS BY ONE
Doug Williams shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead in the Hickam Invitational at the Mamala Bay Golf Course.
Craig Uyehara is alone in second, and Troy Higashiyama and Marshall Uchida share third after shooting 71s.
Phillip Anamizu tied Williams for the day's best round to lead the Senior Flight by five strokes.
Jacob Morton (73) leads A Flight; Kenneth Creamer, Jim Hrysyzen and Jake Proesch lead B Flight with 80s; and Gary Haynie (75) leads the Super Senior Flight.

MAUI'S ARNOULT LOSES
Esther Vergeer and Jiske Griffioen, the top-seeded team from the Netherlands, swept Americans Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler and Kaitlyn Verfuerth, 6-2, 6-2, yesterday in the first round of the U.S. Open women's wheelchair doubles championship in New York.
Arnoult, from Maui, is the top-ranked woman from the U.S. Four women's teams qualified for the Open.
