Advertiser Staff

DAMIEN MONARCHS

History: Started 1965 (133-317-11)

2005: 4-6, ILH Division II runner-up

Coach: Dean Nakagawa, fifth season (14-27-1)

Players to watch: RB Kama Bailey (5-8, 185, Sr.), CB Mitch Cabreros (5-8, 155, Sr.), DL Haku Correa (6-0, 240, Jr.), DE Lesao Iakopo (5-11, 220, Sr.), QB George Martin (5-11, 160, Sr.), LB Kenneth Rossi Jr. (5-11, 215, Sr.), OL Sione Tau (6-6, 286, Sr.), OL Timo Ulima (5-9, 260, Sr.), S Christian Vasconcellos (6-0, 175, Jr.).

Outlook: The Monarchs graduated 25 players and now have only 12 seniors. They again will rely on a ground attack led by Bailey running behind the blocks of Tau and Ulima. Rossi started at tight end last year.

IOLANI RAIDERS

History: Started 1936 (373-307-28)

2005: 9-4, ILH Division II champion, State Division II champion

Coach: Wendell Look, 16th season (102-74-2)

Players to watch: K Kody Adams (5-8, 160, Sr.), DB Breland Almadova (6-0, 165, So.), OL Jarik Bautista (5-8, 190, Sr.), QB Ryan Dung (6-0, 165, Sr.), WR Lionel Fujioka (5-9, 135, Jr.), LB Carl Gibson (5-10, 175, So.), CB Kela Marciel (5-10, 160, So.), DB Daniel Takami (5-9, 160, Sr.), RB Justin Yamamoto (5-9, 160, Jr.).

Outlook: Even by their standards, the Raiders are small in stature. They also lost 10 starters on offense, but Dung has strong knowledge of the system and Fujioka has emerged as a deep threat. Takami and Gibson lead an undersized but scrappy defense.

KAMEHAMEHA WARRIORS

History: 1903-present (566-292-41)

2005: 8-4, ILH Division I third place

Coach: Kanani Souza, 10th season (82-25-2)

Players to watch: RB Truman Chun (5-8, 185, Jr.), S Rykin Enos (6-0, 187, Sr.), TE Kaneakua Friel (6-4, 220, Sr.), DL Kukunaokala Friel (6-2, 301, So.), DB Andrew Godinet (5-9, 170, Sr.), DB Brandon Hardin (6-3, 185, Sr.), QB Michael Hoke (6-2, 185, Jr.), QB Kahaku Ka'ai (6-4, 220, Sr.), DL Joshua Manapuna (6-2, 270, Sr.), DL Vaughn Meatoga (6-2, 280, Sr.), RB Jordan Rego (5-8, 180, Sr.).

Outlook: The Warriors are big, strong and quick. Hoke and Ka'ai have been sharing time at quarterback. Chun and Rego are quick to the hole. The defense is very athletic and fast.

PAC-FIVE WOLFPACK

History: Started 1974 (136-231-9)

2005: 2-9, ILH Division II third place

Coach: Kip Botelho, third season (7-17-1)

Players to watch: RB Shandon Augustus (5-10, 175, Sr.), WR Matthew Bayan (5-10, 175, Sr.), QB Bryson Beirne (6-3, 225, Sr.), DB Ku Botelho (5-11, 190, Jr.), WR Jordan Ho-Ching (6-1, 185, Sr.), DB Scotty Irvine (5-8, 140, Sr.), RB Jaime Rivera (5-10, 165, Jr.), RB Phillip Sarubbi (5-11, 185, Jr.).

Outlook: The Wolfpack had 42 sophomores last season, so many of the growing pains should disappear. Beirne has a canon for an arm, but Pac-Five has gone to an I-formation and will be balanced offensively.

PUNAHOU BUFFANBLU

History: 1903-present (529-342-34)

2005: 11-3, ILH champion, Division I State runner-up

Coach: Kale Ane, eighth season (45-33)

Players to watch: RB Kainoa Carlson (6-0, 205, Sr.), QB Brett Kan (6-2, 193, Sr.), WR/K River Kim (5-7, 175, Sr.), LB Adam Morris (5-8, 183, Sr.), DB Dane Nishikawa (5-10, 175, Sr.), WR Miah Ostrowski (5-9, 175, Sr.), OL Gavin Silva (6-1, 233, Jr.), RB/LB Manti Te'o (6-1, 210, So.), OL Drew Uperesa (6-2, 242, Sr.), WR Kyle Whitford (5-10, 170, Sr.).

Outlook: Ostrowski suffered a sprained ankle Saturday but could be ready for next week's ILH opener. Kim is a reliable receiver and Kan is back for a third year as starter. Te'o should be one of the state's top newcomers.

SAINT LOUIS CRUSADERS

History: Started 1920 (599-233-38)

2005: 8-4, ILH Division I runner-up

Coach: Delbert Tengan, fourth season (29-9)

Players to watch: SB Shane Ahlo, WR Kuli'a Aiona, SB Chase Alcott, RB Lene Auelua, LB Jacob Barit, K Kenton Chun, RB Devan Essner, LB Zach Higgins, DB Jeffrey Kahler, SB Preston Lynch, QB Micah Mamiya, DB Todd Nakano, WR Ricksson Pacarro, DL Scott Smith, WR Billy Stutzmann, OL Ana Tuiasosopo, OL Tui Tuiasosopo, DL Kamalu Umu.

Outlook: The Crusaders are big and strong again on defense but are smaller than usual on offense, especially at the skill positions. Aiona has good hands and can get open deep. Barit, Umu and Smith anchor a tough front seven on defense.
