1,000 gallons of sewage spilled in Halawa

Advertiser Staff

More than 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled in Halawa yesterday afternoon on Kalaloa Street near Makalapa Park.

The spill was reported at 2:41 p.m. at 99-166 Kalaloa St. and was caused by a grease clog in the 15-inch sewer line. About 1,000 gallons of the wastewater went into the storm drain that leads to the Halawa Stream. City Department of Environmental Services workers confined the spill to the storm drain and cleared the grease clog. The sewer pipe and the storm drain were cleaned and disinfected.

Water samples were taken, and the city is advising the public to avoid the area until the state Department of Health gives the all-clear sign.
