  • Sept. 29 is the deadline to nominate your favorite Realtor for the ninth annual Aloha 'Aina Realtor Awards. Award categories include the People's Choice Award, the Outstanding Newcomer Award (nominations by principal brokers or brokers-in-charge), and the Realtor's Choice Award, presented to five Realtors who have made outstanding personal and professional contributions to their community, customers and clients.   • For the eighth consecutive year, Hawaiian Airlines has been ranked as the nation's top airline serving Hawai'i by Travel & Leisure magazine's 2006 World's Best Awards. Hawaiian was ranked the sixth-best domestic airline nationwide — following JetBlue Airways, Midwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines — and was the only carrier serving Hawai'i listed in the Top 10. Respondents rated airlines in five categories: cabin comfort, food, in-flight service, customer service and value.

  • The Queen's Medical Center Women's Health Center has been selected by Snowmass Institute as one of the country's leading centers for women's health and wellness needs. The institute, a national leader in women's health, recognized the center, open for 18 months, as the "Success Profile" for 2006, noting excellence in clinical programs, outstanding patient satisfaction, positive financials — and its spa-like setting. Besides diagnostic services such as mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy services, the center, with a design based on community feedback, offers women's services such as genetic consultations, osteoporosis evaluation and treatment, and menopause consultation.

  • Two employees of the Women's Community Correctional Center — Sgt. ELENA CHANCHECK and case manager TERESA MIIKE — have been recognized by the state Department of Public Safety, Corrections Division, for sustained superior job performance.

  • CHARLES K. NAKAMA, manager of the City Mill store in Pearl City, has been named one of six 2006 Young Retailers of the Year by the North American Retail Hardware Association. He was chosen from among hardware/home improvement companies throughout North America, based on personal and professional contributions to the industry. Nakama began his career at City Mill in 1993 as a part-time sales associate in Hawai'i Kai, and was promoted through the ranks to store manager in Pearl City.

  • MARCIA ANDERSON, owner of Surface Preparation and Coating Techniques, who became an advocate for the small-business owner before she ever became one, has been named Hawai'i's 2006 Small Business Champion of the Year by the National Federation of Independent Business. Anderson, who has owned her firm since 2003, became active with NFIB 20 years ago, serving on the federation's Hawaii Leadership Council.

  • SALLY LAMPSON-KANEHE, an alumna of the University of Hawai'i School of Social Work and longtime UH instructor, has been inducted into the university's Founders Club for her generous philanthropic support of the school. The honor is reserved for those who have given in excess of $100,000 to UH. Over the years, Lampson-Kanehe has created three endowed UHSSW scholarships — one each for the bachelors, masters and doctorate levels — and has contributed to a distance education fund, a public relations fund and pledged her support for the upcoming 2007 Indigenous Conference.
