Holiday travelers urged to start early

Advertiser Staff

With the upcoming Labor Day weekend, state Department of Transportation officials are reminding passengers at Honolulu International Airport to arrive early for departing flights and that bans on liquids are still in place.

For most domestic and international flights, departing passengers should continue arriving at the airport three hours before departure time. Operations for United Airlines flights No. 72 and No. 934 to San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively, begin at 5 a.m. Departing passengers should arrive at the airport no earlier than 5 a.m.

Departing passengers on interisland flights should arrive 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours before the flights.

Passengers are also advised to come early to secure airport parking over the holiday weekend, or arrange to have someone drop them off at the airport. If the interisland parking lot fills up, interisland passengers are advised to look for parking at the structure for travelers going overseas.

All liquids, gels and aerosols are still prohibited from passing through security screening checkpoints and onto commercial aircraft through carryon luggage.

Passengers are advised to place items such as beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, perfume and cologne with their check-in baggage.

Passengers may carry on solid cosmetics and personal hygiene items, such as lipstick in tubes, solid deodorant and lip balm. Baby formula and breast milk will be allowed on the plane if a baby or small child is traveling. Passengers will be prohibited from bringing juice aboard.

Liquid prescription medicine will be allowed aboard as long as the name on the medicine label matches the passenger's ticket. Up to 8 ounces of low blood sugar treatment (insulin) and up to 4 ounces of essential nonpre-scription liquid medications also will be allowed.

Beverages may be purchased at airport concession stands after security screening, but must be consumed or disposed of before boarding the aircraft.
