FAIR: NOV. 5

The holiday shopping season gets a big boost with the Trash & Treasure fundraising arts and crafts fair presented by Temari, the nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing Asian and Pacific arts. Besides exquisite crafts (at left is an incised clay lamp by Mieko Markwart), the "trash" at the event comprises remnants, seconds and other discards that might still be another person's "treasure."

Three very different twentysomething Filipino Americans from Hawai'i travel to the Philippines and struggle to understand their cultural identity and each other in "Who the Fil-Am I?" Written and directed by Honolulu stage veteran Troy Apostol, the play includes strong language and adult situations. The cast includes Kiana Rivera and K.C. Odell, right.

FESTIVAL: NOV. 10

The fifth annual Great Aloha Tower Beerfest (formerly the Great Diamond Head Beerfest) celebrates all sudsy goodness, with more than 100 beers from ales and stouts to pilsners and seasonal varieties. Beer-friendly food will be offered by many of the restaurants in Aloha Tower Marketplace. Entertainment is by the Newjass Quartet. The admission price includes 12 beer samplings and two pupu plates. The event is for those 21 and older.

Garrison Keillor, right, and the crew of the radio show "A Prairie Home Companion" return for a pair of shows that focus on the fictional Minnesotan town of Lake Wobegon, where everyone is joyfully above average. The shows mark the 25th anniversary of Hawaii Public Radio.

The monologue drama "Thom Pain (based on nothing)" will make its Hawai'i premiere as part of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance's Late Night series. Will Eno's Pulitzer Prize-nominated surreal piece, about promises and existence, stars Peter Ruocco. Ruocco also will perform his short monologue "Conviction," about a possible suicide bomber/performer.

BULL RIDING: NOV. 17-18

Very large bulls and very courageous professional bull riders will be at the Cheeseburger Island Style PBR Hawaii All Star Challenge. The top 15 riders as of Sunday, plus five others to be determined by votes at www.pbrnow.com/vote by Monday, will be showcased.

FAIR: NOV. 18

"O Joy to the World," Hanahau'oli School's annual children's fair is an early holiday celebration that includes pony rides, games, crafts, balloon art, food booths (Nathan's hot dogs, Korean barbecue chicken, teri burgers, curly fries, even tempura handrolls from Sansei), a country store, baked goods and that very fine shave ice from Waiola Store. The fair, aimed at youngsters 2 to 12 years old, is a fundraiser for the school. Park at Roosevelt High School and take the free shuttle to Hanahau'oli.

CONCERT: NOV. 18

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Richard Thompson, left, will be joined by Danny Thompson (no relation) on bass, and special guest Makana in a North Shore concert. Guitarist Thompson, a member of the '60s group Fairport Convention, has never achieved mainstream popularity but has long been a critics' favorite, with and without his ex-wife, singer Linda Thompson.

COMEDY: NOV. 21

That really angry guy, Lewis Black, returns with his brand of really angry, but comic, political and social commentary. Black made a really angry name for himself in appearances on "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart." He also has a role in the recently released film "Man of the Year," starring Robin Williams as a Jon Stewart-like character. John Bowman is the opening act.

Mick, Keith, right, Ronnie and Charlie ... YES! The legendary band The Rolling Stones will close out its A Bigger Bang world tour in Hawai'i. For four decades the band of Brits has been the bad boys — in a good way — of rock 'n' roll, with hits such as "Time is on My Side," "Paint It Black," "Start Me Up," "Brown Sugar," "Emotional Rescue" and "Beast of Burden." George Thorogood & the Destroyers also are on the bill.
