A 39-year-old certified nurse aide was convicted yesterday of abusing patients at the Palolo Chinese Home.

Maria Cobar was found guilty by a jury of four misdemeanor counts of abusing patients from Dec. 1 to Dec. 21, 2004, according to the attorney general's office.

According to state lawyers, Cobar's abuse of the patients included injuring the thumb of an incapacitated 82-year-old man, throwing him from his wheelchair to his bed and "standing idly by" while the patient hit his head against a shower wall. Cobar also left an 86-year-old incontinent woman soiled for the next shift to handle, the lawyers said.

Cobar was fired when fellow staff members reported the abuse, the attorney general's office said.

Cobar is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 6. Each of the four misdemeanor counts carries up to a year in jail.
