Hulihe'e Palace in Kailua, Kona will reopen today for the first public tours since the Oct. 15 earthquakes, and the operators of the palace are seeking donations to help with repairs.

The palace suffered major damage, but has been determined to be structurally sound, according to a written statement released by the palace yesterday. The public will be able to visit the central hallway and look into the heavily damaged side parlors.

Repairs are expected to cost more than $1 million, and repair and stabilization will start immediately using a $50,000 state grant-in-aid received by the nonprofit Daughters of Hawai'i last summer.

Daughters of Hawai'i, which restored the palace and operates it today, is starting an Earthquake Fund to support the repair and restoration of the building.

Donors may make tax-deductible donations to Daughters of Hawai'i'i, 2913 Pali Highway, Honolulu, HI 96817.

Donors should specify that they want to contribute toward the restoration of Hulihe'e Palace.
