TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. Forest Whitaker is a brilliant actor ("The Crying Game") and director ("Waiting to Exhale"). Tonight, he plays a stroke victim who faces Kovac in court. Meanwhile, Abby returns to work, shaken by her crises.

Halloween films, everywhere. Cable people seem to have seized Halloween as their holiday. For years, ABC Family has had "13 Days of Halloween." That starts at 8 p.m. today with "Corpse Bride" (2005). Tim Burton directed the animated movie, with music by Danny Elfman and voices by Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and more. Now the Sci Fi Channel has its own streak, which it calls ... well, "13 Days of Halloween." (There are no points for originality.) It starts at 3:30 p.m. with "Christine" (1983), a terrific John Carpenter film, from a Stephen King tale of a killer car. Meanwhile, at 8 p.m. the Disney Channel has "Twitches" (2005), an enjoyable film with Tia and Tamera Mowry as long-separated twins with special powers. There's more — much more — coming.

Baseball or cartoons, 2 p.m., Fox. If there are no games left in the league championship series, Fox will rerun cartoons. That starts with the "Simpsons" episode that has Homer signing up for a wife-swap reality show.

"Top Chef" opener (5 p.m.) and "Project Runway" finale (6 p.m.), Bravo. If you missed these shows yesterday, here are instant reruns. "Chef" starts with 15 contestants; "Runway" ends with four fashion designers.

"Ugly Betty," 7 p.m., ABC. Betty's nephew Justin — who knows a lot more about fashion than she does — visits the magazine for a school project. Meanwhile, two archenemies, Daniel and Wilhelmina, combine on a mission.

"My Name is Earl," 7 p.m., NBC. To spiff up her image before going to trial, Joy volunteers at a senior center. That's where Earl finds the old man whom he once fired from his rock band. Now it's time to make amends.

"The Office," 7:30 p.m., NBC. B.J. Novak, who plays Ryan, wrote this script for himself. Ryan heads out on his first sales call, with Dwight keeping an eye on him.

"Grey's Anatomy," 8 p.m., ABC. Derek learns more about the relationship between Addison and the persistent Mark Sloane.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. A woman's body is found at a church where there are differing opinions of the priest.

"Shark," 9 p.m., CBS. Stark has trouble at work and at home. At work, he's prosecuting a rape case in which the victim had a relationship with one of the defendants. At home, his straight-arrow daughter has been accused of plagiarism.

"Six Degrees," 9 p.m., ABC. Mae, who's living under aliases, is ready to disappear again. Carlos, fascinated by her, tries to learn more about her.
