If last night was any indication, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team could be scary this season. As in scary good.
Bobby Nash had a perfect shooting night and scored 12 points to lead the White to a 40-35 victory over the Green in an intrasquad scrimmage that highlighted the Twilight 'Ohana.
A crowd of around 2,000 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the official opening of practice for the UH men's and women's teams.
Nash was the No. 1 pick in the draft of players for last night's scrimmage, and he justified it by shooting 4 of 4 from the field, including three 3-pointers.
"I was happy to be picked No. 1, but it took my teammates on the White team to pull off this win," he said. "We all hustled and played together as a team."
Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace said he liked the competitiveness of the scrimmage, but said the Rainbow Warriors "still have to learn to work as a team."
"To score 40 points and 35 in a scrimmage like this is a pretty good sign," Wallace said. "I don't know if we've scored that many points before."
The scrimmage was limited to 20 minutes, with a running clock for the first 18 minutes.
Matt Gibson, who redshirted last season along with Nash due to separate injury issues, added nine points and three assists for the White.
Matt Lojeski led the Green with 12 points and newcomer Riley Luettgerodt added nine points.
The Green team got a surprising boost from senior center Ahmet Gueye, who made his only basket of the game. Gueye underwent surgery on his right knee in March, and is still not considered 100 percent healed.
"I needed this," Gueye said. "I was a little hesitant to go in at first, but once I got in there, I started to see how fun it was and I enjoyed it."
Wallace said: "I wanted Ahmet to play. He has to build the confidence back because structurally, the knee is fine."
In keeping with annual tradition, the players from both the men's and women's UH teams came out in Halloween costumes for their introductions.
The Sheriff Center court was turned into a mock graveyard for the introductions, and the theme of the night was "Freaky Friday the 13th."
Wallace capped the introductions when he came out in a coffin — with his assistant coaches serving as pallbearers. When the coffin opened, Wallace declared "I ain't dead yet."
"I just want people to know I'm ready to coach this team," Wallace said. "There was no message."
Wallace is entering his 20th season as head coach of the 'Bows.
Hawai'i women's head coach Jim Bolla came out dressed as the Grim Reaper, leading Wallace's mock funeral procession into the arena.
Among the players who received the loudest cheers from the crowd were: Gueye as Darth Vader, Lojeski as Dracula, Dominic Waters as an alien, Stephen Verwers as the Hulk, and Nash and Janevia Taylor from the women's team performing a dance routine to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" song.
Also, last night:
Brittany Grice added four points and six rebounds, and Cassidy Chretien had six points for the Black. Saundra Cariaga and Megan Tinnin led the White with five points each. The scrimmage was limited to 15 minutes, with a running clock.
NOTES
Comedian and actor Sinbad served as a guest coach for the women's scrimmage.
Siblings Mark and Amy Fujihara of Pearl City won the Honolulu Ford Shot for Tuition. Mark, a sophomore, beat 10 other male students by making three free throws; Amy, a senior, beat eight other female students — she was the only one who made a free throw in the first round. The Fujiharas each won $1,500 from Honolulu Ford toward their tuition at UH this year. Amy also won the female tuition last year.
