TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
Sports overload, everywhere. Our TV sets seem like sports machines today. Three of the four big networks fill their schedules with sports. This is the regular day for ABC's college football games. At 2 p.m., it has Michigan at Penn State; on the West Coast, that will be Arizona State at Southern Cal. There's much more, though. NBC has NASCAR racing, at 1 p.m. from Concord, N.C. And Fox continues the American League championship series, with the Oakland A's at the Detroit Tigers, at 1:30 p.m. If that's not enough, there are other games on throughout the afternoon and evening. Consider this a chance to get a cardio workout by pushing the remote-control between plays.
"Wanda Sykes: Sick & Tired," 7 p.m., HBO. With a slow build-up and a dry delivery, Wanda Sykes has a terrific stand-up comedy touch. Here, for instance, she describes being a "Lost" fan who thinks about what she would do if her plane crashed. On one recent flight, she would have immediately started eating the kid next to her; she just found him annoying.
OF NOTE
"Princess Mononoke" (1997), 4 p.m., Cartoon Network. The much-praised, 1995 Japanese cartoon was filled with forest spirits and warriors and more. For the U.S. version, the voices of Claire Danes, Billy Crudup, Minnie Driver and Billy Bob Thornton were added.
"X-Men" (2000), 6 p.m., FX. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen lead superheroes and supervillains (Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman), all of them attractive.
"Saturday Night Live," 10:30 p.m., NBC. This rerun has Dane Cook hosting, with music by The Killers.
