The University of Hawai'i football team, which worked out this morning in the Southern California town of Ontario, will not practice at all in Fresno before tomorrow's game against Fresno State.
Of the 60 players on the UH travel roster, 42 did not play in the last meeting in Fresno, a 70-14 loss in 2004.
Yet there will be a familiar feel when the Warriors enter Bulldog Stadium.
During the first segment of an afternoon team meeting yesterday, the Warriors were led through a virtual tour of Bulldog Stadium.
Guided by visual aids, the Warriors were shown the "Red Mile," the walk from the locker room to the field.
"We showed them the roped-off walkway," assistant coach Jeff Reinebold said. "We told them the fans and the band are going to be there, and 'They're going to heckle you all the way down there.' "
The Warriors were shown pictures of the "Boneyard," a mock cemetery with bone-shaped tombstones marking the conquered opponents.
Reinebold said the players were told: "This is where you're going to be. This is where the student section is. This is the checker-board end zones. Get used to it."
"We wanted to paint a picture for them," Reinebold said. "That's a tough place to play. I don't care if (the Bulldogs') record is 1-4. They have loud, tough fans. We wanted our players to understand that. We wanted our players to recognize all of the different things."
Outside linebacker C.J. Allen-Jones said: "We know what to expect. We're not nervous. We know we're guests in their stadium. We just have to play hard, and do our assignments."
In 2000, the Warriors practiced on the Fresno State campus, near a row of frat houses. The frat guys jeered the Warriors during the entire practice.
Coincidence or not, the Warriors practiced in Ontario, Calif., before Fresno games in 2002 and 2004.
Reinebold said the virtual tour was intended to prepare the newcomers.
"It's a completely different environment in Fresno," Reinebold said. "If you're not ready for it, you're in trouble. We'll see if (the virtual tour) is a great thing to do. If we don't play well, it won't mean anything."
GRICE-MULLINS LEFT OFF FRESNO TRAVEL ROSTER
Right slotback Ryan Grice-Mullins, who missed the past two games because of a sprained left ankle, has not been able to run effectively, and was left off the travel roster.
What's more, Jones said Grice-Mullins might not be available for next week's road game against New Mexico State.
"Those type of injuries are tough," said Jones, noting that right slotback Ross Dickerson was bothered by a sprained ankle for more than a year.
Left outside linebacker Tyson Kafentzis also was removed from the travel roster. There were plans to use Kafentzis, who is suffering from a hairline fracture in his right ankle, as a student assistant coach for this game.
Instead, Bully Fergerstrom replaced Kafentzis.
SAMSON SATELE GETS INVITE TO SHRINE GAME
UH center Samson Satele has been invited to play in the 82nd East West Shrine all-star football game in Houston.
"We heard he's a very good football player and a very good person," said William Homer, the game's director of player personnel.
Satele is one of 60 college seniors who have received invitations.
Homer said "close to 95" players will be invited. Satele is the only UH player to have received an invitation.
"(UH) coach (June) Jones has been really helpful," Homer said. "Hawai'i has a good program. We like to have guys from Hawai'i. We think Samson is very deserving. The bottom line is he's a very good player."
The game will be played Jan. 20, 2007, at Reliant Stadium. In previous years, the game was played in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Satele, defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis, free safety Leonard Peters, and offensive tackles Dane Uperesa and Tala Esera are on the "watch list" for the Senior Bowl.
