University of Hawai'i senior Dale Gammie is Golfweek's National Women's Player of the Week. The honor was announced yesterday.
Gammie, a St. Anthony's graduate from Pukalani, Maui, is the first Rainbow Wahine ever to earn the award.
She won the individual title at the Heather Farr Memorial on Oct. 3 in Broomfield, Colo., becoming the Rainbow Wahine's first tournament champion since 1986. Her 2-under-par 214 total gave her a five-shot victory.
Gammie is currently ranked No. 36 in the country, with a 72.46 scoring average. She is a three-time all-Western Athletic Conference player.
UH will next be in action Oct. 16 to 18 at the New Mexico State Intercollegiate.
STANFORD'S CHUN LEADS
Hawai'i's Mari Chun, a sophomore at Stanford, takes a six-shot lead into today's final round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sammamish, Wash.
Chun, a 2005 Kamehameha Schools graduate, took a one-shot lead with a 4-under-par 68 in Monday's first round at Sahalee Country Club. The score tied her career best.
She extended her advantage to six with a 72 yesterday, with New Mexico's Jodi Ewart (75—146) moving into second.
Arizona sophomore Amanda Wilson, a Waiakea graduate, is tied for 20th at 75—154.
Stanford also leads the team competition by a shot over New Mexico.
Chun had two top-10 finishes as a freshman and was 11th at the 2006 Pac-10 Championship. She has won all three of the Hawai'i women's majors, capturing the match play in 2004 and the stroke play and Jennie K. last year.
PORTER-KING OUSTED
Mary Bea Porter-King, of Lihu'e, Kaua'i, lost in the first round of match play Monday at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur in St. Simons Island, Ga.
Porter-King, the only Hawai'i player to advance, fell to Maggie Scott, of Tennessee, 2 and 1.
Defending champion Diane Lang and seven-time USGA champion Carol Semple Thompson both won third-round matches yesterday to set up a rematch of last year's final in today's morning matches.
