Native groups get $5 million in grants

The Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has granted $5,160,356 to seven native organizations in Hawai'i, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. The Social and Economic Development Strategies grants for fiscal 2006 are designed to strengthen native communities throughout the Pacific region.
Awardees include: Hui Malama o Mo'omomi, $150,000 for a marine conservation project; Keiki O Ka Aina Family Learning Center, $200,000 to establish a cultural and educational center for low- to moderate-income Native Hawaiian families on O'ahu; Native Hawaiian Tourism & Hospitality Association, $872,230 for its Shape the Future of Tourism project; Na Kamalei-Ko'olau Loa Early Education Program, $1,062,601 to increase the quality of learning environments for all children, including diverse learners and those with special needs; Neighborhood Place of Wailuku Inc., $1,149,559 for a family-strengthening program.

MORE TESTS SOUGHT IN DRIVER'S DEATH
The Honolulu medical examiner's office has ordered further tests following an autopsy of a 39-year-old man who crashed his 1996 Honda Accord Sunday on Tantalus Drive near Kolonahe Place.
Darren Iwane died at Straub Clinic & Hospital. City Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the injured man may have experienced a medical problem while driving.

NUTRITION CLASSES HELD FOR SENIORS
LIHU'E — The county Agency on Elderly Affairs will hold classes on nutrition for senior citizens at the Kapa'a and Koloa neighborhood centers.
Classes from 9 to 10 a.m. every Wednesday through Nov. 8 at the Kapa'a Neighborhood Center are presented by Kaua'i Community College nursing students with support from nursing instructors Victoria Mathis and Char Ono.
Koloa classes are 9 to 10 a.m. each Thursday, Oct. 19 through Nov. 16, and are presented by registered dietician Sharon Dela Pena and Ho'ola Lahui Hawai'i.

MAN, 18, HELD IN SEX ASSAULT
Police are seeking to charge an 18-year-old man arrested yesterday in 'Ewa Beach for questioning about a sexual assault involving a minor.
The man was arrested shortly before 2 p.m. on North Road and booked on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault. The assault was reported Saturday at 8 p.m.
