Kula man critical after car hits sign

A 23-year-old Kula man was critically injured yesterday after a single-car crash on Kula Highway in Pukalani, Maui.
Maui police said Mitchell Sarol-Silva was traveling in a white Ford Ranger on Kula Highway about 3:31 a.m. when he lost control on a downhill straightaway and hit a road sign.
The truck overturned and Sarol-Silva was ejected.
Police said he was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Speed and alcohol are possible factors in the crash, police said.
RANCHER FREITAS IN HALL OF FAME
Rose Cambra Freitas, of Maui, will be inducted this month into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame.
Freitas is the first Hawai'i woman to receive the honor. Her induction ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 26 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Freitas and her husband, Raymond, have worked on their Maui cattle ranch for more than 50 years. Recently, she was honored as one of the most influential people in Maui over the past century.
In 1974, Freitas and her daughter, Sharon, founded the only rodeo association for youth. Freitas has also participated in the annual Fourth of July Paniolo Parade for 37 years.

SOUTH KING STREET REPAVING TO BEGIN
Night paving work will begin today on South King Street from McCully Street to Old Wai'alae Road near the Hawaiian Humane Society as part of the city's rehabilitation of that stretch of King Street.
Work will be done between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday night to Friday morning each week, the city said in a statement. The work is expected to take about 45 calendar days to complete.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. "No parking" signs will be posted.

SCHOOL EXPLORES SPOOKY HISTORY
Stories of early explorers of North America and Hawai'i provide the theme of this year's haunted house at 'Aina Haina Elementary School from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27.

PARK COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES STUDIED
Haleakala National Park is accepting public comments on how to manage commercial services within the park.
Commercial services such as horseback, van, bus, hiking, bicycle and astronomy tours must comply with the National Park Service mandate to preserve and protect significant natural and cultural resources while providing opportunities for public use and enjoyment. Park officials are working on a commercial services plan to identify necessary and appropriate activities and the best way to manage them.
Public meetings will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 16 at Helene Hall in Hana and Oct. 17 at Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani. Comments also may be submitted via mail to Commercial Services Plan, c/o Superintendent, Haleakala National Park, P.O. Box 369, Makawao, HI 96768; or via e-mail to HALE _CSP@nps.gov.
Oct. 31 is the comment deadline.
