The Punahou football team's run-and-shoot offense is known for advancing the ball through the air.

For good measure yesterday, the Buffanblu mixed in a "Pound that rock" running game to beat visiting 'Iolani, 52-25, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchup.

Brett Kan completed 22 of 32 passes for 302 yards, and No. 2 Punahou (5-1, 2-1) gained 230 rushing yards against an under-sized 'Iolani defense.

Kan threw two touchdown passes to Miah Ostrowski as the Buffanblu overcame a slow start to score 32 consecutive points over the second and third quarters.

"Brett is a great quarterback, if you give him some time he'll hit you," said Ostrowski, who caught eight passes for 128 yards. "He's very efficient."

Five Buffanblu receivers caught at least three passes from Kan.

"All my receivers are quick, they get open and I love them," Kan said.

Punahou running back Dalton Hilliard had 14 carries for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

"Dalton had an awesome game. He's someone we need to get the ball to," Punahou coach Kale Ane said.

Hilliard, who is no relation to the former NFL running back of the same name, said the Buffanblu wanted to establish a smash-mouth style against 'Iolani (3-2-1, 1-1-1) .

"This week we emphasized that we have to, like Jon Gruden said for the Bucs: 'We have to pound that rock,' and we did that," he said.

Punahou, an ILH Division I team, had six plays that gained more than 30 yards with three of them rushes.

"They're a good football team, they got a lot of weapons on offense, they have play makers on offense," 'Iolani coach Wendell Look said. "They kind of just wore us down today."

'Iolani gained 434 yards, but committed four turnovers.

Ryan Dung completed 23 of 46 passes for 307 yards, but 'Iolani gained 127 yards on 28 rushing attempts.

The No. 8 Raiders led 10-7 after a 25-yard field goal by Kody Adams with 9:20 left before halftime.

Punahou answered with a touchdown, field goal and touchdown on its next three possessions to go up 23-10 with 1:30 left before halftime. Ten of the points came off two interceptions by 'Iolani, a Division II team.

"We kept it close for a while and (Kan) got into his rhythm," Look said.

The Buffanblu put the game away during a 1:42 span of the third quarter.

Kan connected with Ostrowski on a 15-yard touchdown pass, Siu Tafuna tackled the 'Iolani punter in the end zone after a high snap from center for a safety and Hilliard scored on a 33-yard run to make it 39-10 with 4:19 left in the third.

Punahou rebounded from its first loss of the season, a 38-35 defeat to Saint Louis last week.

"We definitely needed this," Kan said. "We were talking the whole week, this is going to be our first step. We have five steps to go, five more games left."

Next week, the Buffanblu have a rematch with No. 1 Saint Louis.
