Beach reopens after two sightings

Water safety personnel reopened the beach at Ha'ena Beach Park yesterday morning, after shark sightings prompted them to close the beach Sunday.
The Kaua'i Ocean Safety Bureau had closed the beach after two 10-foot sharks were spotted swimming in the nearshore waters.

WARNING ISSUED ABOUT CARROT JUICE
Amid concerns of botulism, the state Department of Health yesterday advised Hawai'i consumers against drinking Bolthouse Farms Carrot Juice in certain packaging.
The targeted containers are 450-milliliter and 1-liter plastic bottles, with "Best If Used By" dates of Nov. 11 or earlier.
Although there have been no confirmed cases of botulism in Hawai'i, state health officials said they wanted to reinforce a federal warning to discard the product.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers Friday night not to drink the juice after linking it to a fourth case of botulism.

SOUTH ST. LANES MAY BE CLOSED
Downtown commuters may find the going slow on South Street this morning after a water main break last night closed the intersection of South and Halekauwila streets.
An 8-inch-diameter main burst about 9:25 p.m., causing a geyser that showered rocks and mud over the intersection.
A Honolulu Board of Water Supply crew was repairing the pipe late last night but said some lanes would probably still be closed this morning.

WOMAN ARRESTED IN SCUFFLE ON BUS
A 49-year-old woman was arrested Sunday morning after she allegedly came to blows with a city bus driver over an expired disability bus pass.
Police were told that the woman boarded the bus and showed an expired disability bus pass. The driver confiscated the pass, as is company policy, and told the woman she would have to pay for her ride.
Police were told that the woman paid the fare and went to her seat and then became angry about the incident, believing the pass had been stolen from her.
According to the complaint, the passenger went back to talk to the 41-year-old bus driver and they got into an argument that turned physical, resulting in injuries to both women.
Police arrested the rider about 9:05 a.m. near School Street and Kapalama Avenue on suspicion of interference with the operator of a public transit vehicle, a felony offense.

SCHOOL STAGING CAN, BOTTLE DRIVE
Mililani High School's Project Graduation 2007 committee is holding a HI 5¢ can and bottle drive Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school's parking lot. The group will accept donations of redeemable aluminum cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles.
Project Graduation is a post-commencement celebration that is alcohol- and substance-free.
Future can and bottle drives will be held at the same time and place on the first Saturday of each month through May 2007. For more information, call 625-9876.

BLUES FEST SET AT CENTERSTAGE
The Mental Health Association in Hawaii will hold its sixth annual Beyond the Blues festival Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ala Moana Center's Centerstage.
Musicians Edward Harrison, Boogie, Coconut Joe and Downtown Charlie will be featured.
In addition to the blues performances, there will be mental health educational displays to enhance awareness of stress, depression, mental illness and ways to strengthen mental health.
The event celebrates the 64th anniversary of the Mental Health Association in Hawaii and National Mental Illness Awareness Week. The festival is sponsored by the Adult Mental Health Division of the state Department of Health, Johnson & Johnson and Kahi Mohala Behavioral Health.
