Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office yesterday identified the man killed Friday while running across the H-1 Freeway as Isao Yamashiro, 78. Yamashiro was struck by a Toyota 4Runner about 5 a.m. as he tried to cross the freeway east of the Queen Emma Street overpass. He died at the scene.

His death was O'ahu's 87th traffic fatality of the year and the 19th involving a pedestrian.

WAIKIKI

SAND PROJECT DELAYED AGAIN

High surf has again delayed the state Department of Land and Natural Resources' beach replenishment project.

The state on Monday began setting up the equipment to pump sand from offshore onto Kuhio Beach, but yesterday high surf made it impossible to continue laying the pipeline.

The surf is expected to remain the same through tomorrow, but the DLNR hopes that conditions will be calm enough tomorrow to get the pipe laid so that pumping can begin on Friday or sometime next week.

The project, which has already been postponed for a month because of weather and waves, will "inflate" Waikiki Beach with 10,000 cubic yards of offshore sand.

BIG ISLAND

HOLUALOA MAN WAS CYCLE FATALITY

A 52-year-old man who died Sunday of injuries from a motorcycle crash has been identified as Mark A. Bucholz of Holualoa.

Bucholz was traveling east on Walua Road on a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle shortly before 7:10 p.m. Sunday when he lost control, crossed the centerline and struck an embankment near the intersection of Walua Road and Lunapule Road in Kailua, Kona, police said.

A fire rescue crew took Bucholz to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:17 p.m. An autopsy was ordered.

Bucholz was not wearing a helmet, and police believe speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

MAPUNAPUNA

SITE EVACUATED AFTER POSSIBLE LEAK

Concerns about a possible ammonia leak yesterday prompted fire officials to evacuate the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Hawaii building in Mapunapuna.

"We don't think it's anything, but we evacuated as a precaution," said fire Capt. Kenison Tejada. "It may be a minor leak or it may just be normal venting."

There were no reports of injuries or anyone suffering ill effects, Tejada said.

The incident was reported at 3:35 p.m. and affected the area bordered by Mapunapuna, Pukoloa and Ahua streets.

KAUA'I

ETHICS PANEL CLEARS COMMISSIONER

The Kaua'i Board of Ethics has cleared Police Commissioner Carol Furtado of a charge that she improperly played favorites in the appointment of former Police Chief K.C. Lum, giving him information other candidates lacked.

The Board of Ethics adopted the recommendation of a hearings officer in the case, retired judge John McConnell. He concluded that while Furtado clearly favored Lum for the police department's top job, there was no evidence that she improperly used her position to provide him with an unfair advantage.

WAHIAWA

A 28-year-old man with no permanent local address was arrested Monday on suspicion of burglary after police found him in a Waikalani Drive apartment in Wahiawa.

Police had gone to the home to investigate a 3 p.m. complaint about a suspicious person.
