Amateurs take lead in Burns golf

The teams of Kevin Shimomura and Pierre-Henri Soero, and Chan Kim and Todd Fujikawa helped the amateurs take a 7-5 lead over the professionals yesterday in the 34th Gov. John Burns Challenge Cup at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Shimomura and Soero beat Mark Morrison and Ivan Cunningham, 2-1, in the morning's 4-ball match play, then beat Morrison and Cunningham, 5-3, in the afternoon's 4-some match play.
Kim and Fujikawa beat Beau Yokomoto and Regan Lee, 3-2, in the morning, then beat Yokomoto and Lee, 3-2, in the afternoon.
The amateur team has won just 10 times (there was one tie) in the event's history. The final round will be played today.

JOBE, LAM TRIUMPH
Hawai'i's Ikaika Jobe and Chris Lam won their opening matches in the main draw of the $50,000 Wailea Men's Challenger yesterday at the Wailea Tennis Club.
Jobe, a Punahou School graduate, beat former Hawai'i Pacific standout Mikael Maata, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4). Lam, a UCLA grad who was homeschooled in Honolulu, ousted Japan's Kei Nishikori, 6-1, 6-2.
Third-seeded Mark Philippoussis of Australia also advanced when Japan's Gouichi Motomura quit after cramping with the match tied 1-1, and the third game tied 2-2.
