Kristian Manuma got pregnant at age 15.

At 17, with two babies, Manuma is still learning how to be a mother.

She worries every day about failing 18-month-old Malachi-Kenese Faamu and 4-month-old Magdalene Henry.

She also is uncertain about her future. The teen dropped out of high school to take care of her children. Her boyfriend and the father of her kids, Blair Henry, works part-time and his paycheck barely covers diapers and infant formula.

"I'm thankful for my babies," Manuma said. "But it's challenging. ... I can't really do the things I want to do. When my friends call up, sometimes my mind starts to wish things never happened at all."

Manuma and her family are living with her parents in Wai'anae. She is the oldest of six siblings and her parents are also having trouble making ends meet. But Manuma said they have supported her, and are urging her to pursue a GED.

"They love my babies more than they love me," Manuma joked.

Manuma and her family get food stamps and welfare subsidies. She has applied for several jobs, but has had no call-backs. Her dream is to become a flight attendant.

Manuma said diapers, wipes and formula would greatly help. She also said she can't afford Christmas gifts for her kids, and would appreciate toys or gift certificates.

"I'm struggling to keep things together. But most of all I'm scared," Manuma said. "I'm afraid of not being able to give my kids presents for Christmas. ... I'm asking for help because my kids are worth it."
