It's difficult to live in Hawai'i and not find something to be thankful for every day. This is a state whose breathtaking scenery is matched only by the spirit of its people. We saw this during the recent earthquake, when communities pulled together, sharing food, water and companionship with one another as we all waited for the power to be restored. While it may not have seemed like it at the time, Oct. 15 was indeed a day to be thankful. Though the daylong outage was an inconvenience, there was minimal damage, given the magnitude.
As the power was out, many residents said they felt grateful for the time with their families. With televisions, computers and lights off, many families spent the evening simply talking to each other. And that's something that we often take for granted.
For the thousands of U.S. troops overseas who are separated from their loved ones during this holiday, family time is a luxury they can't afford. Among so many other things, let's be thankful for these sacrifices made by those serving in the military on our behalf.
And let's not forget as we give thanks, to remember the second part of the holiday's name: giving.
Today, The Advertiser launches its annual Christmas Fund, where donations are used for families who need help through the holidays. Any money remaining after the holidays will be used to help those in need throughout the year.
Everyone deserves a reason to be thankful — a holiday meal, presents under a tree, time with family.
As a community, we can make that happen.
