Ward resigns AD position at HPU

Jill Ward will be leaving her position as Hawai'i Pacific athletic director effective Dec. 1.
Ward, who took the job on a full-time basis in September of 2005, is moving to Japan with her husband, who received transfer orders from the Navy last month.
"I have appreciated the opportunity to be Athletics Director in that I was exposed to so many wonderful students, coaches and people here at HPU," Ward said in a release.
HPU Vice-President of Administration Rick Stepien said of Ward: "While her tenure as of Director of Athletics has been relatively short, the positive impact she has had on our student-athletes has been significant."
Darren Vorderbruegge, assistant athletic director and head men's basketball coach, will assume the AD position on an interim basis. HPU will begin a national search for the position in the near future.
BASKETBALL
BYUH WINS, LOSES
Freshman Junior Ale scored 19 points and Lucas Alves added 18 points and 10 rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Oakland City (Ind.), 93-69, last night in the final game of the Seasider DII Tournament at Cannon Activities Center.
Corey Nielson added 10 points for the Seasiders (3-0), who shot 51.6 percent (32 of 62) from the field and 91.7 percent (22 of 24) from the free-throw line.
Andy Kissel scored 16 points and Keegan Carmony 15 for the Mighty Oaks (1-1).
Earlier, Jodi Hobbs scored 21 points, making 10 of 10 free throws, as Oakland City (Ind.) defeated BYUH, 77-67, in a women's game.
Kim Sliwa scored 14 points for the Mighty Oaks (1-1).
Latoya Wily had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and sister Artevia Wily added 19 points and seven rebounds for the Seasiders (0-1).
HPU WOMEN FALL
Vanessa Wilt had 22 points and 10 rebounds as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 50-36, last night in a women's game at San Bernardino, Calif.
Jaclyn Rainville added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Coyotes in their season opener.
Rachel Hancock led the Sea Warriors (0-3) with 11 points and nine rebounds.
CROSS COUNTRY
IACOVELLI PLACES 19TH
Hawai'i Pacific's Todd Iacovelli finished 19th in a field of 187 runners yesterday at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships at Pensacola, Fla.
Iacovelli completed the 10-kilometer race in a personal-best 30 minutes, 1.3 seconds.
"This was a great race," said Iacovelli, a Punahou School graduate. "First time at the nationals, and then I earned All-America honors, and this was a great way to finish off my college career."
Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian won the race for the third time, finishing in 29:17.5.
TENNIS
NO. 1 SELA IN FINAL
Top-seeded Dudi Sela of Israel defeated fourth-seeded Alberto Francis, 6-4, 6-4, yesterday to reach the singles final of the Honolulu Futures USTA Pro Circuit event at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex.
Fritz Womarans of South Africa beat eighth-seeded Fred Hemmes of the Netherlands, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1, in the other semifinal.
The singles final is scheduled for today at 10 a.m., and will be followed by the doubles final.
WINTER BASEBALL
CANEFIRES PREVAIL
The West Oahu CaneFires scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Waikiki BeachBoys, 7-4, last night in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Les Murakami Stadium.
The CaneFires bunched three of their seven hits, and capitalized on three passed balls and a throwing error by Beachboys catcher Jeff Clement, to break a 4-4 tie in the ninth.
John Whittleman hit a three-run homer for West Oahu, while Clement hit a solo shot for Waikiki.

SHARKS TRIUMPH
Paco Figueroa hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the seventh as the Honolulu Sharks beat the North Shore Honu, 3-2, last night in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Hans L'Orange Park.
Honolulu's Scott Roehl (1-1) and Wardell Starling each pitched two scoreless innings of relief, teaming for seven strikeouts and no walks.
Rodney Choy Foo had three hits, including a two-run double, to lead North Shore.
