Lam ousted in quarterfinals of Honolulu Futures tennis

Advertiser Staff

South Africa's Fritz Wolmarans, who took out the second seed in the first round, continued his run at the Honolulu Futures yesterday by outlasting Honolulu's Chris Lam, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

The $15,000 USTA Pro Circuit event is being played at the University of Hawai'i. The singles and doubles finals will start at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Lam, a member of last year's NCAA championship team at UCLA, is in his first year on the pro tour. He has risen more than 650 spots to a ranking of No. 878 in the world, but yesterday could not slow the big serves of Wolmarans, ranked No. 672.

There were no service breaks in the first set and Wolmarans won the tiebreaker with what Lam called "huge" serves and two costly Lam mistakes. Lam evened it in the second set, breaking serve and holding his to get to a third set. There, Wolmarans returned the favor, breaking Lam's serve at 3-all and serving out the match.

"I am disappointed," said Lam, who won $435 and three ranking points. "It was a good tournament, but there are a few things I need to work on. I need to get a few more free points on my serve and work on my return. He had a big serve, but a lot of guys do out here so I've got to return a little better."

Top-seeded Dudi Sela advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Michael McClune yesterday. Sela will play fourth-seeded Alberto Francis at 10 a.m. today. Francis defeated Jeffrey Das, 6-3, 6-4. Wolmarans will take on eighth-seeded Fred Hemmes, who beat third-seeded Lesley Joseph, 7-6 (12-10), 4-6, 6-4.

There will also be a Community Tennis Day this morning, beginning at 8. The public is invited to a cardio class and beginner clinics.

GOLF

MAEKAWA LEADS STATE

Sean Maekawa, a senior at Honoka'a High School, shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Prince Resorts Hawai'i/TaylorMade Hawai'i State Open.

Donald Hildre, of San Diego, shot a 69 at the Hawai'i Prince Golf Club to stand alone in second. Hildre is competing in the tournament with his father, a Kamuela resident playing in the senior division.

Four pros — John Lynch, Chad Fribley, Tom Eubank and Greg Sharp — are tied for third at 70.

Stan Souza and Leland Lindsay share a two-stroke lead in the senior division at 72.

Cyd Okino, an eighth-grader at Kaimuki Middle School, leads the women's division by one stroke after shooting a 72.

BOXING

VILORIA GOOD TO GO

Brian Viloria of Waipahu and Omar Nino of Mexico both made the 108-pound weight limit yesterday for tonight's World Boxing Council light-flyweight championship boxing match.

Viloria will try to regain the WBC championship tonight at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

"Brian was right at 108, and he's looking and feeling great," his manager Gary Gittelsohn said.

Nino, who weighed in at 107 yesterday, upset Viloria via unanimous decision to take the belt in August. It was the first loss of Viloria's pro career.

Viloria is 19-1 with 12 knockouts; Nino is 24-2-1 with 10 knockouts.

In the main event, Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines will take on Erik Morales of Mexico.

The card will be televised nationally on pay-per-view.
