Punahou claims ILH water polo title, 10-7

Tim Steinmeier scored five goals and Jack Roney added two to lead Punahou to a 10-7 victory over 'Iolani last night for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's overall title at the Kamehameha Schools' pool.
Curtiss Baldwin, Kai Golden and Caton Smith each added goals for the Buffanblu, who won the ILH regular-season title.
Stephen Lim scored three goals, Andy Atkinson had two, and Victor Wong and Joshua Busse one each for the Raiders, the ILH tournament champions.
SOFTBALL
FIVE 'BOWS HONORED
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) named five University of Hawai'i softball players as 2006 Scholar-Athletes.
Paula Blanning, a pitcher from Australia, graduated last spring with a communications degree and a 3.587 GPA. Julie Franklin, a freshman shortstop out of Temple City, Calif., posted a 4.00 GPA. Freshman Gail Matsushima, a Punahou School alum, accumulated a 3.855 GPA in business. Brandi Peiler, a sophomore transfer and Kamehameha Schools alum, compiled a 3.521 GPA in family resources. Freshman Clare Warwick earned a 3.90 GPA in kinesiology.
BASEBALL
YOUTH TEAM TO JAPAN
A group of local youths, along with Saint Louis School and Hawai'i Pacific University alum Benny Agbayani, will visit Japan for the fifth Goodwill Youth Baseball Tournament from Sunday to Thursday.
The team will visit cities in Ehime Prefecture, a fisheries school, as well as a memorial for those who died on the Ehime Maru when it sank off the coast of O'ahu on Feb. 9, 2001.
Agbayani, who played for the New York Mets in Major League Baseball, now plays for the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan.
"I am honored to be involved with both the Hawai'i and Ehime baseball players," Agbayani said. "It's a perfect union and it's so important to continue what was started in 2002."
BASKETBALL
SENSLEY GETS WAIVED
Former University of Hawai'i forward Julian Sensley was one of four players waived yesterday by the Colorado 49ers of the NBA Development League.
Guards Sheldon Pace and Rodney Billups, and forward Tyrone Salley were also put on waivers by Colorado.
TENNIS
LAM REACHES 3RD ROUND
Hawai'i's Chris Lam defeated sixth-seeded Henry Adjei-Darko, 6-1, 7-5, yesterday to advance to the third round of the ITF Honolulu Futures at the UH Tennis Complex.
University of Hawai'i's Sascha Heinemann lost to third-seeded Lesley Joseph, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Lam and partner Rodrigo Grilli lost their semifinal match to Vahid Mirzadeh and Brett Ross, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
