Although Thanksgiving is still a week away, Christmas trees are already starting to arrive in the Islands.

Don Quijote has already advertised a Christmas tree sale starting Saturday. City Mill will be selling trees by Wednesday with prices about the same as last year, said general manager Kirk Knapp.

Many stores will begin selling trees Thanksgiving weekend, when the bulk of tree shipments are scheduled to arrive here. Kmart will begin selling trees on Thanksgiving Day and has ordered about 20 percent more trees than last year, said Bill Watkins, a buyer for Kmart in Hawai'i. Home Depot will start its Christmas tree sales the day after Thanksgiving.

Some major tree growers report it's been a good year for growing trees.

"We got a lot of rain; they got a nice good drink of rain before we started cutting them," said Kim Canamore, owner of Canamore Trees in Oregon City. "They're big and beautiful."

Canamore estimated the company is shipping about 3,000 trees to the Islands this year, about the same amount as last year.

Tacoma, Wash.-based Kirk Co., one of several growers that supply Hawai'i, will bring in two more containers than last year, said district manager Gary Snyder.

"As far as pricing, I would say it would be probably equivalent to last year's," he said. "Quality will be up. All in all it should be a good year for everybody."
