In an epic quarterfinal match, Wai'anae rallied and took advantage of one too many Mid-Pacific mistakes for a 14-25, 25-21, 28-26 victory in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division II Boys Volleyball State Championships last night at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

The No. 3 Seariders (14-0) will meet No. 2 Hana (10-0) in a 7:30 semifinal tonight at Radford. The Owls (10-11) face Waimea in a consolation match at 6 p.m.

There were 14 ties and 15 lead changes in the third game.

Blake Hixson put away one of his four kills to knot it at 24, but the Seariders' Anthony Robinson and Casey Seminavage stuffed the next Owl attack to reclaim the lead, 25-24. Andrew Agcaoli scored the next Mid-Pacific point on a quick middle attack and a Wai'anae player was whistled for a net violation, giving the Owls match point at 26-25.

Mid-Pacific set up another middle attack, but it sailed wide. The Seariders went to Robert Mokiao, who put down a cross-court shot, giving Wai'anae match point. On the final play, a Mid-Pacific overpass was put away by Mokiao.

Robinson led Wai'anae with eight kills. Mokiao and Jesse Lafua added six, and Seminavage had five.

"This was a very difficult game for us because they were such an awesome team, but we had to work really hard," said Wai'anae head coach Georgieann Keiki.

Reece Haines had a match-high 17 kills for Mid-Pacific.

HANA DEF. WAIMEA

Bula Hoopai hammered 10 kills as No. 2 seed Hana beat Waimea, 25-22, 25-19, in a quarterfinal match at Radford.

Harold Kaiwi added nine kills and three blocks for the Dragons, the Maui Interscholastic League champions.

In the first game, Hana pulled away with three straight kills to make it 20-16. The Menehunes (9-1) rallied to cut it to 24-22 on successive blocks by Calsen Agrade, but the ensuing serve was into the net.

After trailing much of the second game, Hana claimed the lead for good on a Hoopai kill that made it 16-15. The Dragons then went on a 9-4 run to finish the match.

Agrade led Waimea with seven kills.

MARYKNOLL BEATS KALANI

The top-seeded Spartans (14-7) swept the Falcons (12-3), 25-14, 25-15, to advance to the semifinals where they will meet No. 4 Hilo at 7:30 p.m. at Kamehameha.

HILO DEFEATS 'AIEA

The fourth-seeded Vikings (13-5) edged Na Ali'i (9-6), 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, at Kekuhaupi'o Gymnasium. 'Aiea plays Kalani in a consolation match at 6 p.m.
