Two weekends ago, a first for Hawai'i Prep football occurred.

Two former Ka Makani — Max Unger and Daniel Te'o-Nesheim — played opposite each other in a Pac-10 Conference game.

"It was kind of weird. It was a little different from being teammates," said Unger, a left tackle for Oregon who played against Washington freshman defensive end Daniel Te'o-Nesheim.

Oregon defeated Washington, 34-14, Nov. 4.

"It's very rare for guys from a small school to play in the conference," Unger said.

It was not only Hawai'i Prep players banging bodies, but Hawai'i players filling the trenches. Both Unger and Te'o-Nesheim were parts of three-man units of Hawai'i players who started for their respective teams.

Unger, Enoka Lucas (Kamehameha) and Palauni Ma Sun Jr. (Kahuku) started for the Ducks on the offensive line, and Te'o-Nesheim, Wilson Afoa (Saint Louis) and Brandon Ala (Kamehameha) started for the Huskies on the defensive line. Donny Mateaki ('Iolani) also played.

"It was cool," Unger said. "Hawai'i high school football is a pretty small venue compared to Oregon or Washington ... (but) Hawai'i high school football is pretty good. Watching some of the high school players, we'd be pretty competitive (in Oregon). (OIA) and (ILH) teams would do more than good up here."

Unger called HPA "a tiny school. My junior year, when we went to states, we had 27 or 28 guys on the team. Definitely not a powerhouse."

He couldn't explain how despite HPA's small numbers, two of its players ended up at Pac-10 programs.

"I think we're the only two (HPA) guys to get Division I scholarships out of high school," Unger said.
