Peters is region's top player

Brigham Young-Hawai'i outside hitter Michelle "Tuli" Peters has been named the Daktronics Pacific Region Volleyball Player of the Year.

Peters, a junior from La'ie, is averaging 5.65 kills and 4.09 digs per game for the Seasiders, who are 20-0 and ranked No. 8 in the national Division II coaches poll.

Peters is eligible for the Daktronics All-America team.

BYUH setter LeeAnn Mapu, Hawai'i-Hilo outside hitter Taina Savage and Hawai'i Pacific middle blocker Barbara Martin were selected to the region's second team.


SURFING

PATACCHIA ADVANCES

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nova Schin Festival men's surfing contest yesterday.

The fourth round was completed in 3- to 5-foot waves at Rosa Beach, Brazil.

Patacchia defeated Brazil's Odirlei Coutinho in the fourth round, 13.27-12.33, despite surfing with a broken board for most of the heat.

"I buckled my board about halfway through the heat and I didn't have an extra board on the beach, so I had no choice but to ride it," Patacchia said.

Patacchia is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the event.


TENNIS

JOBE WINS OPENER

Kailua's Ikaika Jobe defeated Brett Ross of the U.S., 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), yesterday in the first round of the Waikoloa Futures USTA Pro Circuit event at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Kohala Tennis Garden.

Also, top-seeded Dudi Sela of Israel beat Honolulu's Chris Lam, 6-3, 6-4; fifth-seeded Henry Adjei-Darko of Ghana beat University of Hawai'i sophomore Sascha Heinemann, 6-4, 6-1, and Dave Lingman of the U.S. beat UH sophomore Jeff Fitch, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, Lam and Brazil's Rodrigo Grilli beat the USA's Theron Cole and Nick Meister, 6-2, 6-3; and Adjei-Darko and Lesley Joseph beat the Big Island's Malino Oda nd Nicholas Moxley, 6-4, 6-2.


GOLF

PRO-SCRATCH CHAMPS

Turtle Bay Resort's Kellan Anderson teamed with amateur Troy Higashiyama to shoot a final-round 63 yesterday and win the Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship at Pearl Country Club.

Anderson and Higashiyama finished with a tournament-record 23-under 121 in the best-ball-of-two format to beat the runner-up tandem of Mauna Kea Resort's Kevin Hayashi and amateur Elton Tanaka by five strokes.

UH DROPS INTO 11TH

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team tumbled from third to 11th yesterday at the 16-team UH Fall Intercollegiate tournament at Kane'ohe's Klipper Golf Course.

The Warriors shot 15-over 303 for a two-day total of 15-over 591. Loyola Marymount leads with 294—574.

Loyola's Brian Locke (71) and College of Charleston's Gari Maton (69) share the individual lead at 5-under 139. Pierre-Henri Soero leads UH at 75—146 for 20th place.


SWIMMING

WAC HONORS MACKEY

University of Hawai'i senior Nicole Mackey, who won all five of her events at last weekend's Lincoln Aquatics Shootout in Irvine, Calif., has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.

Mackey won the 100 back, 200 back and 400 individual medley on Friday, then captured the 200 back and 200 individual medley on Saturday to lead the Rainbow Wahine to the title with a 6-0 record.
