American women win in volleyball

The U.S. women's national volleyball team — with three former University of Hawai'i players in the starting lineup — defeated Cameroon, 25-17, 25-18, 25-11, yesterday in first-round play of the FIVB World Championships at Kobe, Japan.
The U.S. improved to 3-0 in the tournament and is tied for first in Pool C along with Brazil. The victory assured Team USA a berth in the World Championship second round at Osaka, Japan.
The U.S. scored 20 of the last 24 points of the third game to clinch the match.
"In this match we were able to find our rhythm and we are happy with the result," said U.S. captain Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, the former Rainbow Wahine setter. "The Cameroon players worked very hard."
Ah Mow-Santos had a team-high 21 assists. Former UH middle blocker Heather Bown had 12 points on nine kills and three aces while ex-UH outside hitter Therese Crawford contributed seven points.
HPU SWEEPS HILO
Barbara Martin had 19 kills and five blocks as Hawai'i Pacific beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-26, 30-20, 30-21, last night in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match at Hilo civic.
Melissa Sekigawa had 22 digs for the Sea Warriors (8-15 overall, 5-9 PacWest).
Taiana Savage had 12 kills and nine digs for Hilo (5-18, 3-11).
GOLF
SEKI'S SO CLOSE
Punahou alum Jim Seki shot a 2-under-par 70 yesterday and was tied for 26th after the third round of the PGA Tour First Stage Qualifying at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, Calif.
The top 27 and ties after today's final round advance to the second stage.
Troy Kelly of Lakewood, Wash., leads the field at 15-under 201 after a 68 yesterday.
Jarrett Hamamoto, a former University of Hawai'i golfer, shares 38th with a 1-under 215 total after a 74 yesterday.
Elsewhere, Honolulu's Stan Souza, Kailua, Kona's Mark Morrison and Kapolei's Faitala Sofa failed to advance to the national finals of the Champions Tour Q-school qualifying.
John Chaffee was the regional qualifier medalist at 280 after a 64 yesterday at PGA Southern California Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.
The top 22 advance to the National Finals, Nov. 15 to 18 in Florida. The cut was 297.
Morrison shot a 77 to finish at 306, Souza shot 79—308 and Sofa shot 73—316.

JOBE EARNS BERTH
Punahou graduate Ikaika Jobe defeated Lahainaluna graduate Malino Oda, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), yesterday in the final of the Waikoloa Futures Wild Card Tournament, at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Kohala Tennis Garden. Jobe and Oda, both two-time state high school champions, beat out a field of 25.
Jobe, who has been playing Futures events recently, earns a spot in the main draw of the $15,000 USTA Pro Circuit event, which begins Tuesday at Waikoloa. Honolulu's Chris Lam, No. 868 in the world, earned a place by virtue of his ranking.
Oda, the Mauna Lani head pro, will now try to qualify. That begins today at 10 a.m. and also includes Hawai'i pros Nicholas Moxley and Michael Calkins and all eight members of the University of Hawai'i tennis team. Quarterfinalists advance to the main draw.
Honolulu Futures is the following week (Nov. 11-19) at the UH Tennis Complex. The inaugural Wailea Challenger, a $50,000 event, is Nov. 25 to Dec. 3 on Maui.
