The award-winning feature film "The Land Has Eyes," written and directed by University of Hawai'i professor Vilsoni Hereniko, is being released on DVD at Borders and Native Books/Na Mea Hawaii.
Hereniko and the co-producer of the film, Jeannette Paulson Hereniko, will autograph copies at noon today at Borders Waikele, and at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Borders, Ward Centre.
Audy Kimura, who was a composer for the film's soundtrack, will be joining the Herenikos at tomorrow's signing.
"The Land Has Eyes" is the story of Viki (played by Sapeta Taito), a young South Pacific islander inspired and haunted by the mythical Warrior Woman of Rotuma, an island of Fiji. Rotuma's lush tropical beauty contrasts with the stifling conformity of Viki's culture as she confronts notions of justice and her own personal freedom.
The film has been screened worldwide in theaters and at festivals, garnishing critical and audience acclaim, including winning awards at international film festivals in Toronto and New Zealand. Last year, Fiji submitted the film for Oscar consideration as best foreign-language film.
In addition to the complete 87-minute feature film with English subtitles, the DVD has several other features, including:
The DVD retails for $29.98.
