A concert by the Rolling Stones was one of a fall Big Four for live music fans in Honolulu, along with shows from U2, Pearl Jam and Billy Joel. But Stones fans here no longer will get what they want. The band has canceled its Thanksgiving eve show at Aloha Stadium.

The band is taking four days off from its more than yearlong A Bigger Bang world tour so vocalist Mick Jagger can recover from throat problems, concert promoter Live Nation announced yesterday. The hiatus has prompted the rescheduling of four dates — in New Jersey, California and Canada.

Honolulu was the only concert canceled.

No explanation was provided why Honolulu was the odd city out. However, Aloha Stadium officials have said the football season left only limited nights available for setup and breakdown of a concert of the Stones' magnitude.

Ticketmaster began issuing refunds yesterday.

The Nov. 22 Aloha Stadium show would have been the final date on the North American leg of the 14-month tour. Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles will now host the Stones on Nov. 22, and the tour's final destination will be Vancouver on Nov. 25.

Like many Stones fans here, ticketholder Robert Souza of Kailua said yesterday's announcement surprised him.

"I'm really disappointed," said Souza, who attended the Stones' last Honolulu show in January 1998. "It's too bad, because I heard a rumor that Hawai'i could have been their last concert ever. I don't know if that was true.

"If (Jagger's) got medical problems, it's acceptable," Souza said. "You have to take care of your health before a concert. That's a good enough reason."

Donna Jung of Makiki won-dered why the Honolulu concert was the only one canceled.

"My friends and I had a huge party planned before the concert, during the concert and after the concert," Jung said. "We had major plans. We had fabulous seats. ... We were going to share this super special fun evening, and now it's gone."

Jung attended the Stones' 1998 Aloha Stadium show and a Seattle stop last year. She has tickets for the Stones' Nov. 11 concert in Las Vegas.

"But it won't be the same as sharing it with your friends in your own hometown," said Jung.

A spokesperson from Ticketmaster could not be reached for comment yesterday about the total tickets sold. An online search by The Advertiser last week found tickets available at every price level from $60 nosebleed seats to $350 seats on the stadium floor.

The New York Daily News reported yesterday that a $51 million class action lawsuit was being filed on behalf of fans upset by the Stones' postponement of an Atlantic City show scheduled for last Friday. The Oct. 27 concert — now rescheduled for Nov. 17 — was canceled four hours before the Stones were set to take the stage because of Jagger's throat problems. The suit contends that the last-minute cancellation resulted in substantial unrefundable out-of-pocket costs for travel and hotel reservations, the newspaper reported.
