Kono, Kim tied for third at AGJA tournament

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono and former local resident Kimberly Kim are tied for third at 144 — four shots behind leader Esther Choe — after yesterday's second round of the Thunderbird International Junior in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Kono, who led after a first-round 70, shot a 2-over 74 yesterday with four birdies and six bogeys at the par-72, 6,271-yard Raptor Course at the Grayhawk Golf Club.
Kim, who started the day tied for fifth, shot a 1-under 71 yesterday with two birdies and one bogey.
Kim moved from Pahoa on the Big Island to California earlier this year.
Choe of Scottsdale, Ariz., leads with a 68—140, and Isabelle Lendl of Goshen, Conn., is second with a 69—142.
Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa is tied for 37th in the boys division after a 78—155 on the 7,113-yard layout.
The tournament, which is conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, has a field of 48 boys and 36 girls, ages 12 to 18, from 16 states, Australia, Canada, China, Columbia, Finland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Slovenia, Sweden and Taiwan.BEACH VOLLEYBALL
PUNAHOU ALUMS FALL IN SEMIS OF AVP EVENT
Punahou alums Stein Metzger and Mike Lambert lost in the semifinals of the AVP Cuervo Gold Crown Huntington Beach (Calif.) Open yesterday.
Brent Doble and Ryan Mariano defeated Lambert and Metzger, 14-21, 21-17, 22-20.
Doble and Mariano lost in the final to Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, 21-17, 21-18.
In the women's final, top seeded Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh beat No. 2 seed Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs, 21-16, 21-12. The win was the fourth consecutive title for May-Treanor and Walsh this season.
