Mililani's Stephens at speed clinic

Mililani High's Britney Stephens, who won the 200-meter dash at the state high school track meet, will be among the participants at this week's Hawai'i Speed and Quickness clinics at the University of Hawai'i athletic complex.
For the past year, she has been a regular at the clinics.
"After last year's track season, she needed to get stronger," said her father, Travis Stephens, a lawyer in the public defender's office and a former Leilehua High and Chaminade University basketball player.
At the clinics, Stephens learned to train in plyometrics and box-jumping. The techniques, which she could use at home, helped improve her push-off from the starting blocks and endurance. "It made me stronger, and helped me accelerate in the last 15 meters," she said.
In 2005, she ran 100 meters in 12.6 seconds, and 200 meters in 26.1 seconds. This year, she ran bests of 12.3 and 25.5.
Her performances at this year's state meet drew interest from Occidental, New Mexico and Azusa Pacific. As a junior, she cannot receive scholarship offers until July 1.
The clinics will be held tomorrow and Sunday. Sessions are 8:30 to 10 a.m. for ages 7-12, and 10:30 a.m. to noon for those 13 and older. Each session is $10, and includes coupons redeemable at Jamba Juice, Papa John's Pizza and Subway. The first 10 to sign up for each session receives a free T-shirt.
