Rainbows suffer 'embarrassing' loss

San Francisco posted season highs in runs and hits to crush nationally ranked Hawai'i, 15-1, yesterday at Benedetti Diamond in San Francisco.
The Dons (37-19) extended their win streak to nine. The Rainbows (37-13), ranked 25th by the Rosenblatt Report and 29th by Collegiate Baseball, saw their eight-game win streak snapped.
"It was embarrassing," UH coach Mike Trapasso said. "Not the final score, but the way we approached it."
The Dons scored against six of UH's seven pitchers in tallying 21 hits. The runs and hits allowed by UH matched season-highs from a 15-9 loss to Texas-Arlington on March 1. It was their most lopsided loss since a 13-2 thumping at Fresno State on April 9. The Rainbows are now 13-3 away from home.
The Rainbows have had games like this scattered throughout the season, but to their credit have usually bounced back. Their longest losing streak is two. But at this juncture of the season, they can't afford that to happen the rest of the way.
"They've been pretty darn good the entire season, but I don't have an answer for today," Trapasso said. "We had no passion at all. We just showed up. We've had a couple games this year where we've done that and when you do that against a team that's on fire, you're going to get smoked.
"It's disappointing whether it's the 10 days off, the travel, or taking finals. Those are just excuses. Hopefully, we will learn from that and go to San Jose and play like we have pretty much all year."
Yesterday was UH's first game since May 6 at Louisiana Tech. The Rainbows had been off last week when they had final exams.
Jason Dufloth (2-1) allowed a run on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings for the Dons. Cole Stipovich, John Ouine and Brian Anderson each added a scoreless inning of relief.
Luis Avila had two of UH's four hits, a triple and RBI double.
Hawai'i's pitching took a beating from starter Mark Rodrigues (3-2), who gave up three runs in two-plus innings, to the five relievers who followed. Tyler Davis (1 2/3 innings, two runs), Ian Harrington (four batters faced, three runs), Matt Daly (1 2/3 innings, two runs), Jeff Soskin (2/3 of an inning, three runs) and Dean Turner (2/3 of an inning, two unearned runs) all could not escape the wrath of USF's offense. Darrell Fisherbaugh (1 1/3 innings) was the only Rainbow not to allow a run.
The Dons had two five-run innings, sending nine batters to the plate in the fourth and 11 in the seventh.
Stefan Gartrell and Luke Sommer each drove in four runs, while Daniel Morales batted 4 for 5 and Scott Cousins 3 for 4, scoring four runs.
The 'Bows travel to San Jose today, where they will have workouts today and tomorrow. They conclude the Western Athletic Conference regular season with a three-game series at San Jose State (12-9) starting Friday. The 'Bows (14-6 WAC) trail first-place Fresno State (15-6) by a half-game and lead the third-place Spartans by 2 1/2 games.
