WAIPI'O — 'Aiea can start making travel arrangements for the state baseball tournament on Maui.

Na Ali'i clinched their fifth consecutive state tournament berth yesterday by defeating Kalani, 7-1, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

"Making it to the state tournament was one of our goals," 'Aiea coach Ryan Kato said. "Now we have another goal to shoot after — the OIA championship."

'Aiea, the West Division's top seed, will face East No. 2 Kaiser, in today's 4 p.m. semifinal at CORP. The other semifinal features East No. 3 Kailua against East No. 1 Moanalua at 5:30.

Kalani will visit Leilehua at 4 p.m. today in a consolation bracket game to stay alive for the OIA's fifth state berth.

'Aiea's ace left-hander, Cody Aquino, took three-hitter into the sixth inning yesterday but surrendered Jason Lee's sacrifice fly and left with the bases loaded and a 7-1 lead.

Randy Castillo finished the inning by striking out the next two batters looking, and retired the side in the seventh inning.

"Castillo has got some electric stuff," Kato said. "He's been working extremely hard to be in the position he is in now."

Aquino pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed one run on four hits and three walks. He struck out three.

"My fielding backed me up, and our hitting came through today," Aquino said. "In the sixth inning, I kind of lost my touch."

"He's our No. 1 pitcher because of his consistency," Kato said of Aquino. "He always hits his spots. It's easy to play defense behind him."

'Aiea scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Kalani starter Darren Takemoto. Leadoff hitter Tripper Chung walked and moved to second on a single by Aquino, who was replaced by courtesy runner Casey Yara. Yara advanced to third on Derek Grace's run-scoring double, and after a strikeout, Reid Nakamura hit a two-run single. After Joshua Markwith replaced Takemoto, Nakamura stole second and scored on Brian Morihara's single.

'Aiea scored one run in the second inning on Grace's sacrifice fly, got another run in the third on an error and took a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning on Morihara's run-scoring single.

"I don't think we were focused," Kalani coach Shannon Hirai said. "I don't know how much they wanted this game."

The 2006 Wally Yonamine Foundation Baseball State Championship is May 17 to 20 at Iron Maehara Stadium.

Toby Inouye scattered seven hits while striking out three and walking one as the host Cougars beat the Mules in a quarterfinal game. Jarryd Maeda went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Kaiser. John Olley and Joshua Pastor each went 2 for 4 for the Mules.

Kaiser will play 'Aiea today at 4 p.m. in a semifinal game at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

DAMIEN-SAINT LOUIS, SUSPENDED

The Damien and Saint Louis game was suspended due to darkness in the top of the ninth inning with Saint Louis leading 8-7. The game will be resumed at a site and time to be determined today.
