Hamamoto falls in WAC golf playoff

University of Hawai'i golfer Jarett Hamamoto fell in the second round of a playoff to finish second at the Western Athletic Conference Championships yesterday at Crane Creek Country Club in Boise, Idaho.
Hamamoto, who closed with a final-round 70 to finish at 2-under 211, lost the playoff to New Mexico State's Matt Edwards.
Hamamoto was in the lead, until double bogeying the 18th hole to fall into a tie with Edwards.
The Warriors shot a 291 as a team and finished tied for fourth at 27-over, 879. New Mexico won the team title with a 9-over, 861.
Hamamoto will find out Monday if he will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
UH-HILO FINISHES 7TH
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team finished in seventh place yesterday at the Northwest/West Super Regional at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix.
The Vulcans shot a 301 yesterday to finish with a three-round total of 900, 48 over par. CSU-Bakersfield won the tournament at 13-over, 865.
Zachery Jones closed with a 2-over-par 73 to finish at 222 and finished tied for 23rd place to lead the Vulcans.

HILO, HPU IN REGIONALS
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo (29-17) finished the regular season ranked sixth in the West Regional softball poll, while Hawai'i Pacific (27-18) finished at No. 8.
Both teams advance to regionals, May 12 to 14, at a site to be determined.

HULA BOWL EXEC ADDED
Joe Dan Rogers has been named the new executive director of the Hula Bowl college all-star game.
"We are pleased to have been able to secure Joe Dan for this vital role," Hula Bowl owner and CEO Nick Logan said yesterday in a news release issued in Atlanta. "His experience, character, and business acumen solidify the plan that this bowl needs to elevate its position among the other bowl games."
Rogers played ball at Oklahoma and coached at Texas Christian and Alabama. Most recently, he scouted for the Atlanta Falcons.
"Bottom line, Joe Dan Rogers is uniquely qualified for this new challenge," said Logan, chief executive of Atlanta-based Cornerstone Bancard, which acquired the Hula Bowl in January.
